Horace N. Barker, Jr

Horace Newton Barker, Jr., age 79, of Hixson, formerly of Madisonville, passed in his apartment in Hixson, on Friday, December 9, 2022. Horace was a graduate of Madisonville High School, Emory and Henry College in Abingdon, Virginia, and earned a Master's Degree from Columbia University in New York City. He had a career that focused on developing housing for underserved populations that took him to jobs in Washington, DC and Atlanta before he settled in Chattanooga.in 1990 where he worked with many community groups. His niece, Rose, remembers him as being enthusiastic about sports and writing and encouraging her in both areas. He could also always be counted on to be watching the current championship football game! He leaves behind his best friend of 30 years, Lexie Vandergriff, and her son Brad, of Chattanooga, and her grandchildren Lauren, Megan, and Katherine of Santa Fe, NM. He will also be greatly missed by his sister, Ann Barker, and her daughters Juana and Rose, and Juana's sons Gabriel and Alex. Preceded in death by parents, Dr. Horace N. Sr. & Kathaleen Batchelor Barker. He was a dear person who will be missed by all who knew him. Graveside service & interment 2 P.M. Sunday, Hiwassee College Cemetery, Dr. Jerry Russell officiating.
