Howard Gajan Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 13 to Apr. 16, 2016.
Howard Lee "Hokie" Gajan, Jr. passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016, in Jefferson, LA. He was born on September 6, 1959, in Baton Rouge, LA, to Emma Hanegan Gajan and Howard Lee Gajan, Sr. Hokie was married to his beloved wife, Judy Moak Gajan, for 37 years and together they had four daughters, Jennifer Gajan-Mier (Brandon), Kristin G. Sell (Gerald), Megan E. Gajan (Brandon Trahant), and Alexis B. Gajan. He was the loving grandfather of Emma Mier, Caroline Mier, Tucker Mier, Sawyer Mier, Noah Mier, Kamryn Sell, Kinley Sell, and Callen Sell. Hokie was the brother of Patti Anderson, Chipper Gajan (Brenda), Wendy Bradley (Dan), Elaine McManus (Fred), Andy Gajan (Debbie), Robert Gajan (Gwen), Dawn Gajan, and Alton Gajan (Cheryl). Survived by his mother, Emma G. Marchand (Norris), wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends, Hokie is preceded in death by his father, his nephew Daniel Bradley, and granddaughter Grace Rose Sell. A humble man with a strong work ethic, Hokie's tastes were simple yet he had a passion for what he considered to be the finer things in life: family, friends, faith, football, and the great outdoors. His success in playing football at LSU and then professionally in New Orleans made him a reluctant hometown legend. Never one to seek the spotlight, this beloved Saint continued with the NFL as a scout and later found his niche off the field and into the broadcast booth. His instinctive knowledge of the game and flawless quick wit propelled countless fans to "turn down the sound on the TV and turn up Saints radio." Despite his local fame, Hokie's proudest role was being Paw Paw to eight grandchildren. A man of few but impeccably choice words, his life has left an unforgettable mark not only on Louisiana football, but also on the hearts of those that adored his colorful Hokieisms. Hokie Gajan saw the bigger picture, on and off the field, and leaves an incredible legacy behind. We know, without a doubt, that this Saint went marching in to Heaven. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Mass at St. Anselm Catholic Church, 306 St. Mary St., Madisonville, LA 70447 on Friday, April 15, 2016, at 3:00 PM with visitation from 10:00 AM until service time. Interment will follow the service at Theodore Dendinger Cemetery, Madisonville, LA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hokie's memory to Sarcoma Foundation of America www.curesarcoma.org/donate/. Gajan Family and Friends-
I had the good fortune to work with Hokie as we were both scouts for the Saints, just prior to his transition into radio. He was a man of honor, integrity, and great pride. What he taught was not something you'll ever learn in school-be loyal, enjoy life, and be humble in your success. God took you too soon, but he did so for a reason and my guess is that he wanted to learn more about Your Family, Your Friends, Football in Louisiana, and most importantly all your secret Fishing Holes!

You will be greatly missed, Hokie! You were a true New Orleans icon. Had the pleasure of watching you play in the dome and listening to you on the radio. Rest in peace. Prayers to your family and friends. Love from a die hard Saints fan.

I had the pleasure of meeting Hokie twice! Both times at the Louis Armstrong airport in New Orleans as he boarded flights to Tampa Bay and last year to Carolina! I was with 48 Wd Diva's going to Tampa and Hokie took pictures with us and met us at one of the restaurants in Tampa! He took down each and every name of the Diva's and promised to read them on WWL radio the next day! I told him how to pronounce my name Dana (like banana) and be said and "I'm Hokie like Pokie"! He kept his promise and read our names aloud on the radio that Sunday! He and Jim Henderson were the Highlite of out trip but mostly Hokie! Rip Hokie you will truly be missed! I pray comfort for the Gajan family

My fervent prayers have been with Hokie since I learned of his diagnosis: the same rare sarcoma I have been battling for more than two and one half years. It gave us a bond, I felt, and he and your family were continually in my prayers. I continue to ask my God to send peace and comfort as only He can. Where, oh death is your victory? To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and we have assurance that Hokie is marching with the REAL Saints today, whole and healthy, no cancer, no pain, just joy in the presence of almighty God! To Hokie's family, my heart is with you. May His sustaining grace and mercy surround you as you say "see you later" to this wonderful dad, Paw Paw, husband, friend.
