Howard Garrison Obituary

Major General
Howard G. Garrison
formerly of Johnson City
Funeral services for Major General Howard G. Garrison, 86, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5 until 7 at the funeral home.
The General passed away on September 14, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Survivors include his son, Steve Garrison and his wife, Cindy; his grandchildren, Scott Garrison, Atlanta, Ga., and Laura Brook and her husband, Dan, Alpharetta, Ga.; his great-grandchild, Alexandre Boulet; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Helen Cannon Garrison; his sister, Lee Garrison; and brother, Frank Garrison. The retired General was born in Vestal Center, New York, and maintained his home in Johnson City, N.Y., for over 60 years. In 1940, as a young soldier, his Army National Guard unit 106th Regiment of the 27th Division from Upstate New York was activated to FT. McClellan. While stationed at the Fort, he met his wife, the former Helen Cannon. He and Helen lived in Johnson City until 1989 when they moved to Anniston. MG Garrison lived in Anniston until 2005 when he moved to Glencoe, Ala. MG Garrison was a decorated combat veteran with Merrill's Marauders and fought in Burma at the battle of Myitkyna. After the war he had two concurrent careers, one as a senior manager with the IBM Corporation and another with the Army National Guard. He rose to the rank of Major General in command of the 42nd Infantry, a division of 15,000 men. His uninterrupted military career lasted 42 years until he retired in 1978. He was a member of the Airborne Association, the VFW, American Legion and the Ends of the Earth Society. He loved his country and for many years he was honored to participate in local Memorial and Veteran events that recognized those who served in the armed forces both past and present. The General was a true hero to his family and friends; his generous nature, dignity and love of family and friends will always be remembered by those who knew him and loved him. He supported the USO and we encourage donations to that organization in his name. Anniston Memorial

I was a young man in IBM in the 60's and Howard was one on the first managers I worked for. I respected and admired him. He was a major influence in my life and career. I know he will be missed by those who love him.

I was saddened to learn of General Garrisons passing. As a young Second Lt. in the 27th ID, and later in the 27th Armrd Div. he provided the standard of performance and leadership we all strove for. His effect on all who served with him was profound and set the example for us to follow.

I had the privilege to have worked with Howard in IBM. His expertise in matters pertaining to security was second to none. I valued his advice as did everyone he worked with. He was a gentleman and a wonderful person. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

He was someone who made the rules and made them work. I remember well the new car from Don Owen Pontiac every year for 10 or 12 years. He knew how to get things done.
