Rooms,

Years have passed, but I want you to know I still pay close attention to the time (11:11), and still look for that stack of pennies.

I´m guessing you´re just too busy doing the right thing, but you´ll get to it in good time. That´s all good.

Until then friend, my thoughts and memories.

Your fellow Rooms

Rarely a day goes by that I don't remember 'Rooms'. From the mid-70's until today, listening to Gordan Lightfoot, remembering our pledge of 11:11 and four pennies...my best friend then and my best friend now. I miss you Rooms.

I just found out about Howie's untimely death, and then saw his father died shortly before. My heart goes out to the family. You certainly have had more tragedy than a family should be allowed, but it shows how strong you all are. Thanks Perry for sharing that last picture of Howie. I last saw him in the late 90's, I thought I'd always run into him again since I thought I lived close to him. Hoping the warm memories of Howie give you comfort.

I was thinking of Howie today and thought I would look him up on the internet I had not seen him since I moved away from Chicago and got married. We dated occasionally back in 1982/83. I was his date at Pam & Patrick's wedding. I was shocked to read of his passing. My heartfelt condolences to his family although 4 years late.

This is Pam Phelps,
I was a friend and his sister,
I want to thank everyone who has signed this guest book, and thank you for the memories, I new Howie as a wonderful brother, he protected me from harm, I was his youngest sister, I had 3 children each with there own special needs, Howie took them each summer , so I could get a break, and they got to know him well, Howie considered my middle child , Gregory the son he knew he never would have.
I new him as an angle when he was with us.
He loved his family, he loved his dog.
He loved to serve his country.
He always cared about the little guy coming up in rank,
He had great compassion for the elderly.
I know he is now guarding the gates to the waters in heaven.
Again thank you all especially my brother Perry for all that you and your wife have selflessly done for our family. I miss you Howie with every breath I take. I love you Raider for staying with Howie.

Howie:

Although I wasn't in the Coast Guard, I considered you a very dear friend. You always had a way of making people smile with your charm and quick wit--especially me when we "picked" on each other. You will be sorely missed by those you loved and who loved you.

God Bless you and Raider!

I served with Howie beginning at Station Wilmette Harbor, on Lake Michigan, in the late 1980s. We deployed together to Desert Shield/Storm with PSU 303 and to Haiti with PSU 309. We became good friends and I drove Howie to and from Camp Perry, OH on drill weekends for almost seven years until I left the PSU in 1997. Howie was very proud to be part of the Coast Guard and I’m glad that he continued doing what he loved right up until the end. As a former Marine I know that the streets of heaven are guarded by United States Marines and I’m sure they will welcome Howie, knowing he and the United States Coast Guard are securing the ports and patrolling the waterways.
I was hiking in the mountains when Howie’s accident took place. I’m sorry I did not make it home in time to attend his wake and funeral. My sincere condolences to Howie’s family.

Howie,
I will truely miss you my friend. The only thing that brings peace to my mind is that you are there with your best friend, Raider. So to both of you, I hope that you have finally found that special fishing hole in the sky and Raider can run free chasing the rabbits. Some day we'll meet up again and I hope that you have a martini waiting for me. Rest in Peace.

Howie was a great sailor and wonderful asset to the Coast Guard.
I had the privilege of serving with him in Desert Storm. He kept things interesting.

Howie was my coxswain on the 2003 deployment and my section leader during hurricane Katrina. As a leader and as a friend, he didn't just set the bar - he WAS the bar by which everyone else was measured. I will always treasure the memory of our service together, and especially his friendship and wisdom through good times and bad.
Rest in Peace, Chief.

Howie, our paths crossed as your "Group" comes and goes overseas. Last time included my husband. I am so glad we met for dinner on your last trip to Hampton Roads! We feel we lost a friend in this horrible tragedy. I know that you have found peace, and hope that you and Raider run care free!!

Howie is like family. Right now there is another empty spot at our table. What was supposed to be a temporary absence has turned into something unthinkable. But Howie is feasting at the table that we all dream of being at, not a worldly care to be had. You are loved Howie and will be in our hearts forever.

Howie was a Good Fellow through and through.
