Hoyt Ammidon Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 22, 2022.
Hoyt Ammidon Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2022 in Middletown, CT. Born on September 4, 1937 in New York City, he is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Ashley (n?e Moore) Ammidon, their three children and spouses, Hoyt Ammidon III, Eliot & Philip Jacobs and Ashley & Daniel Quinlan, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren, as well as his sister and her husband LeeLee & Scott Ammidon- Sutton. He is predeceased by his parents, Hoyt Ammidon and Elizabeth (n?e Callaway) Ammidon. Hoyt's love and devotion to his family was paramount.

Raised in Cold Spring Harbor, NY on the north shore of Long Island, Hoyt enjoyed all things athletic, and pursued team and individual sports with equal vigor, including sailing, swimming, lacrosse, ice hockey, baseball, tennis, squash, running, golf, and skiing. A superb athlete and fearsome competitor who worked ceaselessly on his game, he took equal pleasure sharing this love and joy of sport, and pursued many of these activities late into life. When not found thrashing a golf ball or whirling about the Great Sound, Bermuda on his wind surfer, one could find him puttering around pursuing his other great passion - the garden.

Hoyt attended the Green Vale School, Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated from Yale University in 1959 with a degree in history. While at Exeter he met and began his courtship with his future wife Ashley. A member of the Yale varsity ice hockey team, he continued to dazzle Ashley with his talent and skill on the rink, and had but no choice to marry his one true love shortly after graduation. With his unending dedication and devotion to Country, Hoyt entered the US Marine Corps and served as a Marine Aviator for four years. He took his love of the Corps to the end - Semper Fi. Following his Honorable Discharge, he began a long and distinguished career on Wall Street by joining Morgan Stanley and ending at Berkshire Global Advisors. He worked tirelessly to provide, but family and friends always came first.

Upon being transferred with his young family to Paris, France in 1972 Hoyt's life blossomed and forever bloomed. New friends, new countries, new cultures, new languages, and of course new foods & wines were just the beginning of his and Ashley's unending travel adventures and future homesteads - Princeton NJ, Houston TX, New York City, Bermuda, Manchester VT, Hobe Sound FL and Essex CT. Curious by nature, and a gifted storyteller - especially after a glass of wine - he energetically explored each new locale and found great satisfaction at the table surrounded by friends and family while sharing good food and a hearty laugh.

Innately spiritual, Hoyt joined and participated in the Church wherever he went. St. John's Episcopal Church, The American Cathedral in Paris, Trinity Church, Brick Church, St. John's Chapel, among others, provided strength, solace and community. He believed the body without a soul was incomplete.

A memorial service will be held at a future date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, he asked for a donation to your charity of choice or House of Worship.

A good life lived. He shall be missed by many, but never forgotten. God bless.

Ashley, how shocked I am accidentally finding this tragic news on the internet twenty days after Hoyt sadly passed. Ashley, my very true and sincere sympathy. Hoyt was a pillar in our family. I don't know what you will do without him; he certainly was your pillar, too. NYC to Hobe Sound, to Essex, I deeply regret we never got together. You have always been in my mind. Love you. You are in my prayers.

Ashley, my heart goes out to you. Hoyt was much more than a first cousin,
a lifelong friend, with whom I had increasing contact during our shared years in New York. You were a great wife and supporter during some of the bumps along the way and I love you as well. God bless you in the days ahead without Hoyt.

To Ashley Ammidon and Family.
Ashley, I´m so sorry for your Huge LOSS, I was just thinking of him and I found this awful news. He was such a honest and wonderful Soul. I´m at a loss for words, but he was the most dedicated and truly one of the most dedicated man who always put his Family first. He never ever crossed any lines and this news breaks my heart as I know yours must be crushed. It´s hard to me to believe that he has passed away so suddenly. He was the Best Boss I´ve ever had. You and he were bonded in love and so much more. God will surely Bless him as he has arrived with our Father in Heaven. I wish I could be there with you all, again. Ashley, you always remembered my Birthday (June 30th) with flowers and your joy. He is surely standing next to his Family which he always put first. He was a special and wonderful man.
My deepest condolences to you, Ashley, Hoyt , Eliot and little Ashley. I loved you all and you all are in my Prayers. My brother is a Minister here in Texas. We will mention him as a bright star that certainly guided me. I was such a naïve young lady. He was such a decent man. Not many of men like him left. God Bless You All during this time and forever.

It was a lifetime treat to be friends with Hoyt and Ashley/ Betsy and I will miss him. The golf, the windsurfing in Bermuda, the stories cannot be duplicated but were great fun to have shared. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to everyone in the family. The photo was taken on their wedding trip in Bermuda.
