DURHAM - Dr. Hugh W. Gardner, Durham, 77, retired forensic psychiatrist, died May 31 after a resolute battle with leukemia.

He is survived by his wife, Luci, daughter Catherine Malmbro and her husband Stefan as well as two grandchildren, Victoria and Olivia, all of Gothenberg, Sweden, son, Hugh Gardner II and wife Ann of Portland, Oregon, sister June Clark of Venice, Florida and niece and grand-niece Cynthia and Elizabeth Kelly of North Falmouth, Massachusetts.

He was a man of yearning mind and infinite variety: aviator, hunter, marksman, docent, woodworker, explorer, traveler, wordsmith, historian, naturalist, photographer, runner, rafter, skier and dancer.

No date has been set for a memorial service.

Dr.Gardner was a caring,intelligent, & a gifted psychiatrist to me.He guided,helped me to understand the feelings I had & to offer help in dealing with daily living in life.Dr.Gardner I thanked him continually for taking me step by step in my confused mental state.Truly a gift from GOD,sent to be a helping hand or a gifted mind to help me with severe depression. THANK YOU !

Dr.Hugh Gardner was a one of a kind psychiatrist,Dr Gardner will be missed! He was truly a blessing to his patients & I was so fortunate to have the very BEST HE WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST, BECAUSE OF HOW HE TAUGHT ME TO BE OPEN & DEFINITELY NOT TO BE AFRAID TO SPEAK YOUR HONEST FEELINGS.WHAT A TREASURE & A GIFT FROM GOD!!! THANK YOU FOR BEING MY PSYCHIATRIST!!!GOD CHOSE THE RIGHT DOCTOR TO GIVE & HELP OTHERS TO REAVH THEIR OOTENTIAL!! I new Hugh well in the 70's. He had a big heart and helped me through the most difficult time in my life after the loss of my daughter. I will be forever grateful. A big loss to all who knew him.
