Hugh Lowrey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 5 to May 7, 2023.
Hugh W. Lowrey, 96, of 1941 Overbrooke Way, Austell, GA passed peacefully at home on Sunday, April 30, 2023. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 69 years, Mary Orr (Williams) Lowrey (in 2021), his parents, Roswell and Mildred (Winters) Lowrey of Hattiesburg, MS and his elder brother, M. Leonard Lowrey, also of Hattiesburg.

He is survived by his twin brother, Edwin J. Lowrey of Black Mountain, NC and four children: Carolyn Muir of St. Peters, MO, Norman Lowrey of Marietta, GA, Kenneth Lowrey of Signal Mountain, TN, and Gwen Kahn of Acworth, GA. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Hugh was born in Blue Mountain, MS, raised in Hattiesburg and educated at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. He began his career as a chemical engineer in the coatings industry in the Atlanta area and moved on to hold positions as the technical director of several coatings firms in FL, AL, and OH. He was very active in what is known today as the Southern Society for Coatings Technology, serving as the 1959-1960 Chairman of the Section in Miami, FL and as the 1965-1966 President of the Society. He held a patent and published several helpful technical papers. He retired during the 1990's in OH and returned to the Atlanta area with his wife to take up residence in the Presbyterian Village in Austell in 2006. In retirement, Hugh took a deep interest in halting the progression of climate change and regularly wrote a newsletter on the subject for his church. While very capable technically, he was also an exceptionally loving and involved husband, father, and family member, easily made friends, and was beloved by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Village Center, 2000 East-West Connector, Austell, GA 30106, on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 10:00 AM followed by a buffet reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Cincinnati Friends Meeting, 8075 Keller Road, Cincinnati, OH 45243, or to Pilgrimage United Church of Christ, 3755 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, GA 30066
