Hugh Maynard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2025.
Hugh Maryott "Bud" Maynard passed away on August 23, 2025, after a short illness. Born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1929, he was the youngest of ten children.

Bud enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1946. He was honorably discharged a year later to return home to care for his mother. Following her death, Bud attended the Missionary Training Institute (later known as Nyack College/Alliance University) on the GI Bill. His college years were a time of new experiences and building lifelong friendships; he played the violin in the college orchestra, which culminated in a performance at Carnegie Hall. In his senior year, Bud met his beloved wife of 66 years, Shirley (Barker) Maynard and they were married in 1951.

Bud and Shirley faithfully served together for the next 30 years pastoring churches in Long Island, New York; Maryland; and Ohio. They moved to Nyack, New York in 1981 when Bud accepted the position of Director of Alliance Development Fund (now Orchard Alliance) with the Christian & Missionary Alliance. Bud remained in that position when the organization relocated to Colorado in 1989 and until his retirement in 1998.

In the 1960s, Bud enjoyed working part-time with Mr. J. C. Penney while opening new department stores in Ohio. He greatly admired Mr. Penney and his strong work ethic. Bud learned the construction business from his older brother-in-law and used that knowledge and experience to build the Maynard family homes in Maryland and Ohio.

Retirement opened a new chapter of 27 years, during which Bud continued his lifelong practice of cultivating relationships with family, friends, and neighbors. He had many interests and enjoyed storytelling, writing, music, theatre, travel, baseball and classic car shows. Bud relocated with family in 2022 to San Diego where he enjoyed the year-round warmth and freedom from snow. A man of remarkable memory, Bud treasured the connections and stories gathered throughout his life. Preserving the Maynard family history was especially important to him. In 2024, he completed a personal memoir to ensure that his family, friends and generations to come would remember the people and stories he so deeply cherished. Ever generous with encouragement, Bud always had a compliment to share and a genuine love for people. He found great joy in witnessing the ways God moved in others' lives and he considered it a privilege to be present for those moments. He was proud to reach the age of 96 and he often expressed gratitude that God still had a purpose for him in this life.

Bud is survived by his daughters, Vickie Mann (Leonard) of Colorado Springs, CO and Carrie Buchan (Robert) of Chula Vista, CA; his granddaughter, Courtney Oliphant (Doug) and grandson, Kyle Buchan; great-grandchildren Renley and Isla Oliphant; by "adopted' daughters Linda Bickler, Judy Wolfe, Judy Taylor and Linda Valenta and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Fred Alvry and Effie Belle (Maryott) Maynard, nine brothers and sisters, and his wife, Shirley.

Bud's quiet and loving spirit, steady presence and unwavering commitment to his family will always be deeply missed. We are comforted by, and rejoice in, God's promise of eternal life for the believer in Jesus Christ and look forward to a joyful reunion in Heaven. A Celebration of Life is planned for November 1, 2025, at Church on the Ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
