Hugh Nesbitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 19 to Mar. 20, 2023.

Hugh Donald Nesbitt, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 16, 2023, at the age of 92. He was born on November 6, 1930, in Rapid City, South Dakota, and lived a fulfilling life surrounded by family, friends, and adventure.

As a youth, Hugh participated in Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle and developing a passion for community service that would last a lifetime. While attending South Dakota State, he spent summers working in the concession stand at Mount Rushmore, became student body president, and participated in ROTC, which led him to serve as an officer in the Army. He served in Virginia and then in Colorado where he trained troops in mountain survival during the Korean War.

In 1953, he married Virginia Johnson Nesbitt, completed his military service, and began working as a professional council executive for the Boy Scouts of America, leading councils in South Dakota, Oregon, Alaska, Washington, and California. He always seemed most at home while in a Boy Scout camp, or camping with his family.

After retiring in 1988, Hugh remained active in the community of Chico, CA. He volunteered for the Chico Heat Baseball team in the concession stand; remained an active member of the Rotary Club, earning a Fellowship Award; and served on several committees for Trinity United Methodist Church. He had a passion for softball and pitched for his gold medal-winning team at the Senior Olympics in St George, Utah.

Hugh and his wife loved to travel taking trips through the US, Canada, Scotland, and participating in Elder Hostel programs.

Hugh Donald Nesbitt was preceded in death by his parents Marshall John and Mary Janet (McCullough) Nesbitt, his brother Raymond Nesbitt, wife Virginia Johnson Nesbitt, and infant daughter Mary Nesbitt. He is survived by his three daughters, April Ann Nesbitt, Nancy Nesbitt Conrad (Mike) Carol Nesbitt Singletary (C. Edward), grandchildren (Rachel Conrad Burlingame, Kaitlin Virginia Conrad, Benjamin Johnson Singletary, Marshall Byron Singletary), and great-grandchildren (Adeline Conrad Burlingame, Elliot Conrad Ehrgott, Isabel Conrad Ehrgott)

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His cheerful and outgoing personality left a positive impact on the community and the world around him. He always had a hop to his step and a whistle on his lips and will be remembered for his love of family, community, and adventure.

Although there will be no services for Hugh, those who would like, may purchase trees in his memory as a way to continue his love of the outdoors. https://shop.arborday.org/commemorative-trees-in-memory

Hugh was the best boss I ever had in all 25 years at the Chico Scout office. I really miss him.

I was sorry to hear about Hugh´s passing. Hugh was my Uncle and the last time I saw him was at my Dad´s (Raymond) funeral back in June of 2010. We had a great talk and I wish I had kept in touch with Uncle Hugh and his family over the years. Uncle Hugh is still my inspiration for playing softball at my young age of 66.
Our thoughts are with Hugh's family - we will miss him.
