Humberto “Bert” Pena Maldonado entered into eternal rest on Friday, August 7, 2015 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 80. He was born on November 13, 1934 to Luciano Maldonado and Candelaria Pena-Maldonado in Falfurrias, TX and was the eldest of nine children. Humberto graduated from Falfurrias High School in 1954 after achieving high accolades in football, track and baseball. He played on the high school varsity football team when he was in the 8th grade and was elected all-district during his four years. He had similar achievements in all sports and was a gifted all-around athlete. He then proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After returning home he met the love of his life Diamantina Vera and married in 1958. After two children they moved to San Antonio in 1963 and he worked as a Master Automotive Mechanic with Firestone. In 1980, he built and opened his own automotive-repair shop “Bert Maldonado Firestone” in Converse, TX. He retired in 2006 and continued his passion for the outdoors including hunting and fishing in addition to following his sports teams (Dallas Cowboys, S.A. Spurs and UT Football). He was loving, caring and always humorous bringing about laughter to those around him. His family was his pride and joy and was loved by family and friends. He enjoyed family events and loved to dance.
He was welcomed into the gates of Heaven by his parents and his sister, Irma Garcia (wife of Arnoldo) from Premont, TX. He also leaves behind to cherish his memories: wife, Diamantina (Vera) Maldonado of New Berlin, TX; daughter, Melisa Rhodes of San Antonio, TX; son, Humberto “Sonny“ and Gail Maldonado Jr. of Austin, TX. Additionally, his four brothers and their families, Rolando and Nori Maldonado, Mike and Annie Maldonado, Luciano and Susan Maldonado Jr. and Roel and Becky Maldonado; sisters, Maria and Ruben Garcia of Brownsville, TX, Yolanda and Adalberto Flores of Falfurrias, TX and Maricella Barnard (wife of “Bill”) of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren, Mariah Rhodes, Nicholas A. I was saddened to hear of your brother's passing--my late husband met Bert at the Firestone store in Converse and they enjoyed trading news from Fal and San Benito, where Jeff grew up. Please know that your family will be in my thoughts and prayers as I remember growing up with all of you in our old hometown. May the Lord bless you all with the comfort that only He can give.
