WHITE Ian George Born in Vancouver, July 24, 1934, Ian was surrounded by his loving family when he died at home on December 2, 2008. He is survived by his devoted wife Carol, her children Andrew, Jennifer and Simon Mortimer-Lamb, grandson Benjamin, PWD puppy "Quincy", and his cousin Robert White of Toronto. Ian will be remembered as a charming and dignified gentleman. He dedicated a thirty-one year career to the Dow Chemical Company. The memorial service will be conducted by The Rev'd Kevin Dixon on Tuesday, December 9th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th, Vancouver. To honour Ian's life and generosity, flowers are gratefully declined in favour of donations to the Vancouver Home Hospice Palliative Care Service, #300-999 West Broadway, Vancouver, V5Z 1K5. Carol and Family;

I was saddened to hear of Ian's passing. He was affectionately known to me as "Mr. White" and was a frequent visitor to our home when I was growing up in Sarnia Ontario. Ian worked at Dow with my father, Gerry Baird, and was so well liked and respected. My father and mother (Marguerite Baird) have both passed on but I wanted to let you know of our fond memories of Ian.

Take Care,

Lisa, Brian, Janice Baird and families

Carol & Family,

Ian was a wonderful man and I enjoyed his company at numerous dinners and holidays in your beautiful home.
I was glad he was able to visit Newfoundland two years ago and to see him again in Vancouver last year.
I can still taste his secret cheese spread recipe!
My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead.

The passing of dear Ian White Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Dear Carol:

Thank you for calling today to share with Gretchen and me that Ian had bravely given up his long fight with a long list of difficult illnesses. The lymphoma and the debilitating chemotherapy. Listeriosis and various infections. The innumerable scans, needle sticks, bone marrow tests and still he bravely soldiered on with you hand in hand right there by his side. Finally, after almost another two weeks in hospital, fighting another presumed infection, he bravely said to Carol “enough, I want to go home.”

When we first got to know Ian, you were already married to him, and your relationship seemed so natural. I remember that you said that Ian made you have faith in yourself again. An incredibly remarkable man, in every sense; displaying brilliance, charm, grace, enthusiasm, strength, warmth and sensitivity. I don’t know what he couldn’t do. He was multi-talented and creative with his power tools. An avid gardener, his roses that were beautiful thanks to his care and the irrigation system he installed. He handled his big pickup and fifth-wheeler like a professional truck driver.

How fortuitous it was that, before Ian’s health failed, you took that trans Canada trip several years ago to visit friends and relatives especially in Newfoundland and in Ontario. And you got to meet with and to stay with our friend Sue Spence in Collingwood when you saw cousin Jerry.

Gretchen and I will not physically be with you in Vancouver at this time. We will be with you and your family in spirit. May you, Carol, Andrew, Jennifer and Benjamin, and Simon and all your family find comfort at this time of sadness and take solace in the fact that we had this precious man in our lives as long as we did. "A man like no other, he will live in our hearts always and forever."

Love,
Fred and Gretchen (Walsh), Los Gatos, CA
