Ida S. Gopan

BANGOR - Ida (Shapiro) Gopan, 93, passed away Sept. 3, 2012, on Cape Cod, Mass., after a brief illness. She was born March 19, 1919, in Rockland, daughter of Samuel and Nettie (Schneider) Shapiro.

Mrs. Gopan moved to Bangor in 1945 to await her husband's return from World War II. With her late husband, Max Gopan, she raised three daughters and became active in community affairs. During her 27 years as executive secretary of Jewish Community Council, she received numerous awards for her service, including the John M. Coombs Memorial Award presented by United Way of Penobscot Valley, State of Israel Bonds Drive and B'nai B'rith. Mrs. Gopan was the past president of Beth Abraham Sisterhood, Hadassah and Senior Citizens Friendship Club.

She is survived by her children, Charlotte and Michael Jerace, Marilyn and Alan Ginesky, Jane Gopan and Joseph Sonia; grandchildren, Scott, Christine, Melissa, Bret, Tiara and Jaime; great-grandchildren, Minna, Kaia, Zachary and Ezra; sister, Elizabeth; brothers, Malcolm and Meredith; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held noon Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be at Beth Abraham Cemetery, Bangor. Memorial observance will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the family home, 302 French St., Bangor.
