India Benoit Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 7, 2024.
India Minturn Benoit, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Culpeper, Virginia, surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 4, 2024. She fought a very brave battle against esophageal cancer for the last nine months of her life. Her family is very grateful that she is now at peace.

India was a pioneer businesswoman in the real estate field, beginning in the 1970s. In 1981 she opened India Benoit, Inc., managing it successfully for many years. After selling her business she kept her license active, working for several Alexandria firms and others, well into her retirement.

In Culpeper, she was an active member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. A member of the Blue Ridge Art League, she became an accomplished painter in the primitive style. Further retirement pursuits included volunteering for the Lab Rescue League of Virginia and the St. Stephen's Food Pantry.

India is survived by her two children Rebecca of Hume, Virginia, and Marq of Nosara, Costa Rica, and five grandchildren - Christopher, Erin, Sally and Elizabeth Langager, and Kai Benoit.

She was a caring and loving mother and grandmother, very supportive of her children, and fiercely loved all her grandchildren. She was the light of her family and inspired them to follow their own paths and strive for the best versions of themselves.

The funeral service will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 115 N. East Street, Culpeper, Virginia, 22701 on Thursday, May 16 at 11:00 AM with a reception to follow. Instead of flowers, donations can be made in her name to one of the organizations listed above or Hospice of the Piedmont based in Charlottesville, VA.

I always liked sitting next to India when she came to our BRAL (Blue Ridge Art League) meetings. She was a wonderful artist and was always glad to share her skills with others . I remember the day she sat in front of her easel and said "I can't paint well any more" with a.beautiful painting of a barn in front of her. After that, she would often come to our painting sessions with her lunch and join us in the "lunch room" just for the fellowship. I didn't get to see her new home but can picture it in my mind because she would come to our painting sessions with fabrics or paint samples so we could share opinions. She will be missed. I met India at BRAWL about 3 years ago. She was an inspiration to all in her art and how she had such courage to build a house at her age . She was so excited , picking out the colors, rugs etc. It´s sad she didn´t get to enjoy it much longer . She was a beautiful lady , in all ways . Lisa Mountjoy

India was a kind, soft spoken woman while confident and self assured. I so admired the fact she ignored her age and lived her life to the fullest. She was looking forward to many years in her new home, and I will never be able to drive by it without thinking of her and the many plans she had for it. I'm so glad to have known her. India is a woman I aspire to be. Never did she look or act her age. She was a joyful member of the Blue Ridge Art League, where I came to know her. She was always humble in spite of keeping a beautiful home and garden, and making delightful art. India always loved painting barns, no doubt an influence on her new home. We laughed about being a small minority of people (we know) who like okra; and I had to plant some, too, after she had it in her garden. It will always be India´s Okra. Her presence was quiet but impactful. I will miss her.
