Irene Francois Meche, 95, of Westlake died at 8:20 AM Sunday, July 16, 2017 in her home surrounded by loved ones.
Mrs. Meche, mother of 12 children, was born in Church Point, LA to parents Eldeen and Arthur "Chick" Francois. She married Gilbert "Tatoo" Meche and moved to Pine Island where they owned and operated Meche's Grocery for over 40 years. After the death of her husband, Irene moved to Westlake and remained there for 32 years where she worked as a seamstress from her home performing sewing and alterations for the local and church communities. She also enjoyed quilting and bingo at the Westlake Senior Center as well as "a good time" with her daughters at the casino where winning was not a priority. She was a devout member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church and leaves behind a rich legacy of a deeply rooted Catholic faith.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children; Ellina Richard (Bruce, deceased), Roanoke; Carolyn Witherwax (Darrel), Mona Morris (Donnie), Lake Charles; Stella Meche, Lilly Bunderson (Doyle), Norma Vidrine (Paul), Westlake; Rayford Meche (Annette), DeQuincy; Keno Meche (Allyson), Big Lake; Diana Landry (Steve), Maplewood; David Meche (DeeDee), Moss Bluff; Brent Meche (Bonnie), Fort Mills, SC; sister, Marie Cormier, Baton Rouge, 30 grandchildren, 50+ great grandchildren. Irene's greatest joy was witnessing the expansion of her family in her grandchildren whom she lovingly passed on values of faith, hope, and charity.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert "Tatoo" Meche, her daughter, Charlotte McGuire, her parents, Eldeen and Arthur "Chick" Francois, and her brother, Burley Francois.
Visitation will be in St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Westlake, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A rosary will begin at 7:00 PM Tuesday evening. Visitation will resume Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 9:00 AM with services beginning 10:00 AM. Burial will be at Pine Island Cemetery in Pine Island under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com
Pallbearers for services will be her grandsons.
Family requested In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to St. John Bosco Catholic Church.
