Carmel ~ Irene Eleanor Greenhut Pollard, age 92, went home to be with the Lord after passing away peacefully from a brave and hard-fought battle with cancer. Irene, a native of Union Mills, IN, graduated Valedictorian of her High School class, attended and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Taylor University, earned a Master's Degree from Purdue University, and continued with a PhD in Bio-Chemistry. Irene then accepted a teaching position at the Indiana University School of Medicine and in 1952, earned her Doctor of Medicine. She practiced in Southern California for many years before completing her residency in Pediatrics at University of California, Irvine. In 1972, she married the love of her life and fellow physician, Dr. Lawrence W. Pollard, Jr. The couple resided in Carmel where Irene worked at the Monterey Health Department before retiring in 1992.

Irene loved children and fiercely believed in education often financially helping with tuition for those that could not afford it. She would tirelessly tutor children (and some adults) in various subjects and even years later, her students came back telling her how much they appreciated the help. Irene also embraced her Christian faith and before her illness, was active with the Sanctuary Bible Church of Carmel Valley and the Holy Assembly Missionary Baptist Church in Marina. She loved sports and being a huge Tiger Woods fan, followed golf. She also loved basketball, baseball, and NASCAR. Irene was also an avid birder, loved nature, and especially her life in sunny and peaceful Carmel Valley.

Irene is survived by her husband of 39 years, Larry; her sister, Dorthy Buck, of Hamlet, IN; a daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, David, of Salinas, CA; and five step-sons, Ford, Kaese, Thomas, Robert, and John, and eight grandchildren. Irene was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin Tatman, of Union Mills, IN. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, and was a loving and caring person that will be missed by all who have known her.

Irene was brought home and laid to rest in Union Mills, IN. A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held May 26, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Sanctuary Bible Church of Carmel Valley, 8340 Carmel Valley Rd., Carmel.

Mrs. Pollard came to my mind this week. She was my kindergarten teacher and I now have a little kindergatener of my own. I have never forgotten Mrs. Pollard and kept in touch here and there through the years but I regret not reaching out regularly. I wish her family love and peace.

Our family sends the most sincere condolences to the family of Irene.

I remember Mrs Pollard, as my son Mark called her, as a humble, dedicated individual. Her genuine love of people shone like a lamp light, on top of a mountain, which drew our family much closer to her.

Irene is part of the vibrant threads that make up the lives of my son and daughter, my husband and I. All the pictures we have of her with our children show that full lively and engaging smile she so warmly shared. The friendship we shared is more precious than words can express - invaluable, and priceless would be just an ordinary expression for such an extraordinary lady

We will sincerely miss her letters of encouragement - and will carry the memory of her forever in our hearts.

I met Mrs. Pollard on a plane flight in 2005, on my way to my grandpa's funeral. We struck up a correspondence, one I unfortunately failed to keep up the last several years. I kept telling myself I hoped she was still alive so I could send her another letter. Her letter's were much appreciated and encouraging over the years, and I wish I had had more time to get to know her. Mrs. Pollard, rest now, in Jesus sweet arms. It won't be long till we meet again, a blink of the eye.

Mrs. Pollard was my kindergarten teacher and tutor over 20 years ago. We kept in touch all those years and she became much more than a teacher, she became a mentor and friend. She was one of God's angels here on Earth and I already miss her so much.

It has been a privilege to know Irene. I met her at Foothill Covenant Church in Los Altos. She kept in touch with me every Christmas. She was a shining light for the Lord and showed much love to people whom she met along the way. I will miss hearing from her.

Dear Family, Irene and I shared a room at Carmel Hills last year and I just wanted all of you to know that I thought she was very sweet and we got along so well together. Irene was so interesting to talk to and when she wanted to go to the bathroom by herself at times (she was supposed to wait to staff to help her) I would call out to her "Irene, you know that you shouldn't be doing that" and she would say "yes, mother"...and we'd laugh. I really enjoyed her friends who came to visit her from her church. They were a wonderful group of people and were a amazing support to her, Our entire family enjoyed her from our little great grand children on up. She even asked my daughter if she had a certain bible so that she could study it. My daughter brought her her bible and gave it to her to keep.
I will miss Irene. She was a very important person to me.
My sincere condolences,
Fay Marcuzzo
