Irene Ruth Poppe, 86, passed away on January 9, 2021. She was born on September 18, 1934 to Elmer and Mathilda Telschow. Irene was the devoted wife of Rodney Poppe, they were married on July 9, 1955 and celebrated 65 years of marriage.

She was the loving mother of Linda (Jeff) Greenhagen, Ellen (Dave) Doescher, Steve Poppe, and Karen Poppe. She was the proud grandmother of Rochelle, Kristin, Elissa, Meredith and Serena, and great-grandmother of Hailey Rose.

Preceded in death by: her siblings: Frederick Telschow, Earl Telschow, and Louise Rudy, and Jean Anne Telschow.

Irene retired from Locust School, in Marengo in 1993, after serving for 20 years as a Teacher. She was a member of the McHenry County Retired Teachers association. Irene was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she participated in the Choir. She also taught Sunday School at Zion for many years. She was also a member of Marengo Women's Club.

Visitation at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, 505 East Grant Highway, Marengo, on Wednesday January 27, 2021 from 4pm-6pm. Due to current circumstances, masks will be required, social distancing should be practiced and a maximum capacity will be allowed in the Funeral Home at a given time (based on current guidelines, which are subject to change). Please be patient and kind as we work though honoring Irene safely and in adherence with Governor guidelines. A continued Visitation will take place at Zion Lutheran Church, 412 Jackson St, Marengo, IL 60152 on Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 10am-11am where a Funeral Service will take place at 11am. Burial to follow at Marengo-City Cemetery. Memorial Contributions in honor of Irene may be made to: Zion Lutheran Church. Arrangements entrusted to Marengo-Union Funeral Home, for information call (815) 568-8131.
