Isaac Boniuk Obituary
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Dr. Isaac Boniuk (Sept. 11, 1938-Aug. 1, 2013), devoted husband to Isabel for over 51 years, loving father of Jonathan (Rena) Boniuk, Wendy (Avi) Spiegelman, and Amy (Joshua) Brickel, loving grandfather of Yoseph, Gavriel, Shuey, Rivka, Elisheva, Adisu, Akiva, Naama, Adi, Asaf, Hadassah, Shoshana (of blessed memory), Tzipora, Tuvia, and Netanel. He was one of 5 children of the late Hyman and the late Rachel Boniuk and brother to the late Nina Regenstreif, the late Mitchell Boniuk, and is survived by his siblings Dr. Milton (Laurie) Boniuk, and Dr. Vivien (Dr. Arthur Cobin) Boniuk.
Dr. Boniuk was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada and attended Dalhousie University in Halifax for college and medical school, completed his ophthalmology residency at UCSF, and his retinal fellowship at Barnes Hospital. He practiced for 38 years at Retinal Consultants and published numerous articles in clinical ophthalmology research. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Okinawa from 1966-68.
Dr. Boniuk was active in countless Jewish organizations in St. Louis and was deeply committed to his synagogue, Traditional Congregation, where he served in many different capacities. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and lloved him.
Funeral service Friday, August 2nd 2:00 PM at Traditional Congregation, 12437 Ladue Road. No visitation prior to service. Interment Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol Cemetery. Memorial contributions preferred to Traditional Congregation, 12437 Ladue Road, St. Louis, MO 63141; Jewish Federation of St. Louis, 12 Millstone Campus Drive, St. Louis, MO 63146 or a charity of your choice.

My sympathies to the Boniuk family. I had no idea that Dr. Boniuk had died until I was looking up the phone number of Barnes Retina Institute on their website. I worked for Retina Consultants at their St. John's office in the early 70's. I had so much respect for him. He treated his patients with kindness and dignity and also those who worked for him. My father was a patient of his and I was no longer working for him when my dad died, but Dr. Boniuk wrote me the nicest sympathy note after his passing. I had not seen him for many years, but I know that he must have been a wonderful husband and father. My sympathies to his family.

Isaac's warmth radiated throughout a room. He was truly a star and will be greatly missed. I cherish the wonderful memories we have of him and still think he had the best team songs for maccabia at kadimah.

Elie and I were so sorry to hear of the loss of Isaac- We just found out yesterday!
Elie always still talks about all the wonderful days in the BAY, and the closeness all the families still feel. It is like one big family!

I was very saddened to hear of Isaac's passing. I haven't seen him in so many years but my brothers and I grew up with the Boniuk kids in Glace Bay so many years ago. Life must go on but we truly miss our old friends. I was glad to hear what a full life he had with loving family and noted accomplishments. My deepest sympathies to the family.

Dear Isabel and family,please accept my deepest sympathies.It's difficult for me to say goodbye to a friend of over 60 years, and especially one as widely admired and respected as Isaac . Not that long ago, Isaac told me that if he had his life to live over, he would have become a rabbi so that he could have helped people more, and I assured him that in his case it really wasn't necessary. My sympathy to all the family of Dr. Boniuk. I saw him as a patient when I had a torn retina. He was recommended to me. I could tell he was a man of grace and wisdom. I'm sure many will miss him.

I was a patient of Dr. B and he was such a gentleman and kind and gentle with his exams and repairs. When he told me he was retiring I knew I would not find another doctor with his 'chairside' manner but I was also happy for him, that he would have more family time.My deepest sympathy.

I haven't seen Isaac in many years but I remember him so vividly that if I had bumped into him on the street we would probably talk as though we were continuing a conversation we had begun the day before.
Isaac was both brilliant and very personable. His marriage helped him sustain this rare combination.
