Isabel MacDonald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 11, 2014.
MacDonald, Isabel Ann, passed away on July 10, 2014, at age 83, at Drummond Hall, Shannex Parkland.

Born in New Glasgow to the late George and Margaret MacDonald, she is survived by siblings, Anne (Clarence) Cameron, Antigonish, Don (Leona), Melmerby Beach, John (Pat), Bedford, Austin, Hammonds Plains, and sister-in-law, Mary (Gerry) Orangeville, ON, many nieces, nephews, and good friends. Predeceased by long time special friend, Don Warner; sister, Mabel; brother, Gerry. Isabel was the matriarch of the family, fondly taking care of her parents, aunts, siblings, nieces and nephews (supporting many of them through university). In her early days, as a teacher, she taught in rural schools, and then moved to Halifax, to teach in a number of inner city schools, her passion. She was a teacher of extended achievement services at St. Agnes School, then a senior staff member at the Halifax School Board in the position of Co-ordinator of Elementary Education. On her retirement the Halifax School Board named a site in her honour "Isabel MacDonald Professional Development Centre". She firmly believed in challenging the gifted students, and was responsible for introducing enriched programs in the grade six/seven classes, as well as enhancing programs for the inner city schools.

Isabel was courageous and stylish, with a love of Jazz, cats, political discussions, good food, and most of all, family. Her heart of gold will never be forgotten by the many people she befriended. Special thanks to Heather Hayes, her close friend for many years, and to the staff at Drummond Hall and Evan Hall, especially Lynn Surette, for her kindness and caring.

Visitation to be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, (455-0531) on Sunday, July 13, from 3-6 pm, with a mass of Christian burial in Saint Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax, Monday, July 14 at 10:30 am. Interment in Oakridge Cemetery.

Family flowers only, donations to the Alzheimer's Society or charity of your choice would be appreciated.

My condolences to Isabel's family. Isabel was my neighbor on Remington Court. She was a wonderful person, kind, thoughtful, funny, helpful, intelligent, generous, and a good friend. If more people were like her, this world would be a better place. May she rest in peace.

It is with profound regret that I learned of Isabel's passing. I was away and could not attend the funeral.
Isabel was a true mentor to me during my time in the "downtown" office, always ready to listen and always thinking of the "kids" first. She leaves behind a rich legacy.
She will be missed!

Isabel was an amazing woman: a wonderful friend to my mother, and I knew her from my earliest memory. She was so independent, ahead of her time, and still such a caring person to all! She is someone that we all wanted to grow up to be. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her!

I am very saddened to hear of Isabel's death. She seemed to always to be there when I was a youth. I had the good fortune to have her teach me in Grade 4. She would send me to the Wheel for an egg salad sandwich ten minutes before dismissal.
Joe A and I took the train to NG to visit Margaret. Guess who was home and she spoiled both of us. We walked to Trenton Road but we drove to the train station.
I always enjoyed visiting with her in Halifax. Mamie and Aus would stay with her, especially on LeMerchand St. Mamie and Isabel would be on the deck smoking and enjoy time tegether. Lots of memories - all pleasant.
I always considered the NG MacDonalds as my adopted family. For some reason, each of you left memories in my head when I stayed with you. We will remember Isabel's hospitality and friendship. Take care of each other during this unfortunate time. I hope to see you on Monday.
God bless.

Isabel was my first cousin and she always took an interest in my education and well-being. When I got my first teaching job in Halifax she had me stay in her apartment until I could afford to move into my own place. I know she was just as kind to everyone. May she rest in peace.

To the MacDonalds & Camerons. So sorry to hear about the passing of Isabel. A class act, if ever there was. I'm sure mom had a cup of tea waiting for her upon her arrival. Sorry, I won't be there, but, you're all in our thoughts and prayers.
