Hakel, Emil “Bud” Benedict Jr., passed away peacefully on January 5, 2017, at the age of 84. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 31, 1932, the youngest of four children. Bud married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Korth, on May 15, 1954. They traveled west to start their life together and settled in Whittier, CA. Bud earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Management from California State University, Fullerton in 1971 while working and raising a family. He worked at Southern California Edison until his retirement in 1988.
Cars, planes and photography were among Bud’s favorite hobbies. He enjoyed attending car shows and built quite a collection of cameras over the years. He had a great appreciation for technology and loved reading about the latest technology.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeanne; his sons, Robert and wife Kim, Bruce and wife DiDi, his daughter, Deanne (Hakel) North and husband Chris, his eight grandchildren (Melissa, Breaha, Leanna, Robert, Julie, Noreen, Lauren and Aaron) and his sister Dorothy. He will be lovingly remembered as a tremendously intelligent, warm and decent human being, a loving husband and devoted father.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 1 pm at El Toro Memorial Park in Lake Forest, CA with a reception at the North family residence immediately following the service. Services entrusted to the care of Fairhaven Memorial Services, Mission Viejo (949) 380-8911.

The long winding road of life
Robert HAKEL

I spent Dad's last birthday with him, July 31, just the two of us . We ate, In-N-Out burgers, fries and shakes that I brought to the house with me. He said it was surely fine dining, the best. I look forward to spending time with him again in heaven. It will be better than an In-N-Out double double with cheese.
Praise the Lord, for He is good all the time.
Be at peace ... all my family and friends
I love you dad

Remembering Dad
My childhood memories are filled with vivid pictures.
Dad was always there with his support and guidance.
He was a man of integrity and was always fair.
Dad was a beacon of light when life seemed dark.
Loved by his family he has left a whole in our hearts.
In his loving way he has helped us remember him.
The pictures my Dad took throughout his life are now a testament to his devotion to his family.
His legacy will continue through his children and grandchildren.
Thanks for the memories (and the photos), Dearest Dad.
Love always,
Your son, Bruce

Bud Hakel was a great uncle to us growing up. He attended numerous celebrations. He came to our graduations in Canoga Park and walked me down the aisle at my wedding. He loved family, kids, and always had something funny to say. I loved the boxes of "stuff" he sent out to us which contained a variety of mixed items from microwave steamers to toys like Jacob's ladder. There was always a mystery item in the box. I never did figure out what it was. He stayed with us here in Omaha for a few days, when he attended his reunion. We had a great time, and as always, he took lots of pictures. We loved the pics and the time. May we all have such great memories and a great Uncle Bud!
