Ismail Mami Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 7, 2008.
Ismail Mami Ismail Mami, 65, died on October 4, 2008 at Big Bend Hospice House in Tallahassee of Corticobasal degeneration, a rare brain disease that he battled since 1999. He was born in Zawia, Libya on November 1, 1942. He came to this country in 1968 and proudly became an American citizen in 1979. While attending FSU, he earned an associate degree in criminology and his PhD in organic chemistry. Ismail taught chemistry at TCC for 16 years and worked in the FDLE crime lab, retiring from his position as supervisor of the chemistry and toxicology sections after 29 years. Ismail was a member of Gulf Winds Track Club and competed in the Ultradistance classic as well as multiple marathons, including the Boston Marathon. His favorite running event was the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run when in 1990 he carried the Olympic torch on its final leg to the Old Capitol to open the games. He was a "swim dad" and stroke and turn judge while his daughter, Suaad, competed with the Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club and Rickards High School. Loving husband and father, Ismail will always be remembered for his love of family, loyalty to friends, dedication to work, amazing sense of humor, and tendency to be the first to laugh at his own jokes. His legacy is carried on in the coworkers and students he inspired and the people he uplifted with his generous and benevolent spirit. Because of the rarity of his disease and for furtherance of research, Ismail's brain was donated to the Northwestern University Alzheimer's Disease Center by his request. He was laid to rest at Memory Gardens next to his beloved daughter, Aziza, who predeceased him in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Lesta Mami of 36 years; daughter, Suaad "Suzy" Marvin and son-in-law Peter Marvin of Tallahassee; four sisters; one brother; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Libya. He was honored in Islamic tradition at the mosque located on Old Bainbridge Road on Monday October 6, 2008 at 2 p.m. Donations to Big Bend Hospice or Northwestern University Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago, Illinois are appreciated.

Dear Lesta and family,
We are so very sorry for your loss. When we think of Michigan, RAP, we always think of Ismail and you. Ted was so very fond of Ismail, they made a wonderful connection right away. Ismail was easy to connect with because he was a wonderful man. Lesta, you are also a wonderful woman and we know that you and your family did everything humanly possible for him. The world is a better place because of him and you as well. Please know that you are in our hearts and prayers.

I had a chemistry class many years ago with Professor Mami at TCC. One moment from that semester remains with me still. We had taken our first exam. I had studied and was well-prepared. Prof. Mami handed out all of the graded tests, except mine. He called me to the front of the class to look at my test. The last page of the test seemed to be the end, but there were actually four more questions on the back of that page, which I had failed to notice. Professor Mami allowed me to stand there, in front of the class, and mark those four quesitons. He then graded it on the spot and handed me my score-- an "A". The class actually applauded him for his kindness to me! It was a small kindness, to be sure, but I am convinvced that those are the things that we are remembered for, in the end. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

One of the most amazing times in my life was just after Ismail Mami married my aunt and they brought there friends to Ohio for a visit. He butchered a lamb, and it was prepared in my mother’s kitchen, Libyan style. To a 12 year old from rural Ohio, the unusual foods and language in the house was incredible. Ismail taught me a few phrases, and how to write my name in Arabic. His passion for the Miami Dolphins was infectious. He would literally leap halfway across the room when the Dolphins would score or have a successful play. His enthusiasm for life and love of family were equally inspiring. He has continued to be someone I have admired greatly. It’s been an honor and a privilege to be part of his extended family, and I will miss him dearly.

I greatly appreciated meeting and to some degree knowing Ismail and the rest of the family. My desire is for the family to be provided the grace necessary in the time of his loss and remember that his many great qualities were acknowledged by all. Know also that he was easy to appreciate for his love of family, twinkling eyes and willingness to listen to others.

I was a volunteer in the Chemistry/Toxicolgy sections in 1997 and 1998. Ismail was wonderful in teaching me the in's and out's of the job and played an integral part in getting me where I am today. He was my mentor, and he was my friend. He will be greatly missed.

Ismail married my childhood and current friend Lesta. early in their marriage I was invited to their trailer home for a special dinner. I was surprised to find out that it was Ismail who had fixed the dinner--cous-cous. Over the years Ismail prepared other meals for me and my husband. He was always a gracious host and friend. I admired Ismail's ability to be patient and loving with his special daughter Aziza. He was kind and gentle and loving to my friend. He was quick with a smile. He was tolerant and respected everyone. He was a good role model for Suzy and us all. He will be greatly missed.

Ismail will be missed. He was a great mentor and a great friend. I will never forget his smile and his silly jokes around the crime lab. I know he is at peace now after his long battle with this terrible disease and I am sure he has his running shoes on once again!
