Ivan Acevedo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2018.
Ivan Acevedo, age 46, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 in San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his father, Carlos Acevedo, Jr. Ivan is survived by his beloved wife, Angelica Acevedo; mother, Pilar Janis; sister, Ana Acevedo; mother-in-law, Angelica Yolanda Calvillo; brothers- in-law, Eduardo Gutierrez, Arturo Gutierrez and Roberto Gutierrez; nephews, Spencer, Erick and Victor; niece, Karla Ximena; and a large extended family. Ivan was a music lover. He had a musician's soul. His taste went from boleros to heavy metal. His record collection was one of his most valuable treasures. Ivan was a very intelligent, learned and educated man. He loved to read. Talking to him was a treat. He always had an answer for any question. Ivan was few months short to become Doctor Acevedo, one of his great achievements in life. He proudly wanted to be part of the small percentage of Hispanic men around the world that succeed on getting a PhD degree. He was currently working on his dissertation 'Preparing for Social Change: Exploring Undergraduate Latina leadership development' which was inspired by his wife from who he was very proud and was his biggest motivation. Ivan had always a positive attitude. He always looked at the positive side of any situation. He focused his attention on things that he was able to resolve and not to the things that were out of his hands. He loved to make people laugh and tried to laugh at any situation. Family and friends were very important to him. He always looked for the way to help everybody who ever needed. Memorial services will be held at 10AM on Thursday April the 5th, at the mausoleum of Mission Park Funeral Chapels and Cemetery Dominion - 20900 IH 10 West. Rabbi David Silverstein will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Family Violence and Prevention Services http://www.fvps.org/, or to the Children's Shelter https://www.childrensshelter.org/

I will always remember Ivan as a student in the M.A. in International Relations program at St. Mary's. The study trip to Guatemala and Mexico was a memorable one. Ivan became a lifelong friend on that trip. He was a gentle soul. He will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him. The family is in the Marianist prayers.

I first met Ivan many years ago on his wedding day. My sister introduced my family and I to this huge weird-looking guy. I didn't understand why my sister had chosen him to be her lifetime companion she had a history of dubious choices regarding her love life, so I couldn't help myself of being suspicious. He seemed nice, though.

Years went by and my suspicions got at ease. He didn't just seem nice, he was the nicest guy I have ever met. He was kind, patient, loving and caring. He and my sister loved each other they were each other's life.

He loved music all kinds of music. I felt really intimidated by sharing my limited musical knowledge with him, yet he never made me feel dumb. He also loved movies and gadgets. He was kind of a nerd.

He was also very modest. Not one single time he bragged about his academic accomplishments. I only knew about his double Master's degree after I heard he was pursuing his PhD eight years after we first met.

In the end I loved the guy. He loved my sister and he made her a better person. We are going to miss him dearly.

So long, cuñadote...

He was unpretentious, what you saw is what you got. He was simple yet sophisticated, educated, and able to bring people together from all walks of life. He was charming with a ready smile but also able to hold his ground when his opinion went astray from others. He was compassionate reaching out to others with support and kind words during their darkest times. He was resourceful helping others find their way through the most challenging situations. He thought more of others than of himself. He is the kind of person that you don't know how much you will miss until he is gone. He was my friend.

My deepest condolences to family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Ivan was a lover of music, from heavy metal to esoteric bands singing in forgotten languages. Always quick with a smile, a joke, and a laugh. When I first met him nearly 25 years ago, he had long hair down his back. I thought he was part Native American, perhaps the descendant of a feared Indian chief. Ivan had one of the largest CD collections I have ever seen. A mammoth display of thousands of albums spanning decades, genres, and musical tastes. We would pass the time listening to Los Heroes del Silencio, Dead Can Dance, and Perry Farrell. The man had an appetite for knowledge and a good time. Ivan, you will be missed. Blessings to your family and may your next journey be a peaceful one.

Our Faculty Development team at Alamo Colleges is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our colleagues. Ivan was a strong participant & graduate in the Adjunct Faculty Certification Program. He shared many professional development training sessions with his peers and taught us so much through his experiences and sharing technology tools he applied in his classes with his students. We will miss him very much. Our condolences to his family. Dr. Kevin Ann Kelsmark, Faculty Development team, Alamo Colleges

Carlos "Ivan" Acevedo was my fellow PhD classmate at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). We took classes together, presented and collaborated in presentations and research projects. He was ex-President of the Doctoral Student Association (DSA) at Dreeben School of Education. He always volunteered filming and as a photographer. He created a study group to help fellow Doctoral Students pass the Qualifying Exam. His untimely death a few months short of obtaining his PhD leaves us perplexed. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. He has gone to be with our Lord in Holy Week. He will be greatly missed.
Maria P. Cantu. UIW Doctoral Candidate.

Ivan has been my Graduate Research Assistant ever since he began doctoral studies at the University of the Incarnate Word in 2013. He was intelligent and skilled and always kind---often encouraging me when I would get tried with this huge research project. Lately because I have been promoting a Tricentennial festival at UIW with Matachines dancers I had been sharing an article that Ivan and I did together https://therivardreport.com/praising-god-with-drums-dancing-and-the-woman-clothed-with-the-sun/ At Mission Concepcion he was filming and photographing, so as I go there tonight to pray the Pesame I think of him and I am grateful for his goodness.
