My sincerest condolences to the Locke family on the passing of my mentor, my friend, Ivy Denise Locke. I knew Dr. Locke during her tenure at Florida State, at which time she formally became "my mentor". She was the most loving, nurturing and giving person I'd ever met. At that time, I struggled academically, while holding down a job at FSU. Dr. Locke's encouragement, guidance and wisdom lit a fire under my feet... she simply said, you'll complete your bachelor's degree "when you're ready"... Those words were seeds and our friendship watered them. She encouraged me to aim high. Whenever I doubted... she said "you can do it and you will... when you're ready". There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of you, Dr. Locke. I miss you. I am ever grateful. You changed my life. Because of you...I achieved a Ph.D.

I know you're in a better place. God bless.

To The Locke Family, Ivy was such a very special person here at RIC. She will be greatly missed. Ivy would take time out of her busy day and make time to spend with my daughter, Elizabeth (age 10)whenever she stopped in. They would go into her treasure box and explore. My daughter will always treasure that memory of Ivy.

To the Locke Family,
Ivy was a true inspiration to the Fredrick Douglass Class of 75. Even as a young teenager her wisdom and intellect were bright shining lights for all of us. I will always hold fond memories of Ivy in my heart. May God comfort you during this difficult time.

To the dearest and most distinguished Locke Family,

Olga and I are still in total disbelief, over the untimely, shocking passing of such a wonderful neighbor and friend of ours,a most distinguished educator and administrator,a radiant light in our lives, and in the lives of all those she so gently touched.

We are the richer for having known her,and now the poorer for not having her physically in our midst.

She will forever remain a source of love and insipration,as we fondly reminisce about our beloved Dr.Ivy,and her dear and engaging mother,Armentha, whom we had the pleasure of meeting, at a wonderful reception ,which our beloved neighbor hosted.

We were so delighted that our friend considered us to be part of her Rhode Island family,as we considered her to be part of ours.

Having met her wonderful mother, were so looking forward to meeting her dad,Thomas, and her brother,Dr.Thomas J.Locke III,and her nieces and nephew,at some future warm gathering at our home, located right across the road from the most endearing, gentle, sweet, demure,Dr.Ivy Locke...who has left us with such indelible memories..

While we shall mourn her sudden and unfortunate passing,we will always surrender a soulful smile to her engaging presence, infinitely palpable and visible.

Such was Dr.Ivy's immeasurable radiance!

I have known Dr. Ivy Locke during our days at Frederick Douglass High School. We grew up in and attend the same church(s), and pursued and obtained our educational goals.

In spite of all of her many accomplishments, Ivy's life was a true exemplary and expression of God. Her upbeat personality, smile, and spirit not only brighten a room or office any day of the week, but also showed others what true love was all about.

I along with the many members of the Fellowship Group Baptist Church are sadden of her sudden death; indeed she will be missed. The many memories we have of her life and the positive ways she made a difference, we will always treasure.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Locke family. God has truly blessed her life... God will continue to bless and comfort you in the days to come.

To the family and loved ones of Dr. Ivy Locke:

Ivy touched so many lives in a very positive way. We both attended Douglass High School together (she was class of 1975, and I was class of 1974).

My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with your family.

There is comfort in knowing that Ivy will always live in your hearts, and peace in knowing that she is resting in the Loving Arms of God.

May God bless and comfort each of you in the days to come. I will keep you in my prayers.

Sincerely, (your Neighbor)
Sheila Jones, State Representative (Atlanta)

I met Ivy when I was called to fill in while a search was undertaken for a new Director of Computer Services at Southeast. She went out of her way to make me feel welcome and devoted a great deal of her free time on weekends to see that I was entertained. God Bless her!

Thomas and Armentha and Family

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this painful time; yet, according to the guest book, Ivy was a wonderful person; and I am sure a wonderful daughter, knowing her parents as I do.

May the memories of joy and love prevail in your hearts and spirit in difficult moments.

I will share the sad new with James Bernard O'Neal who was at Emory when Ivy was there.

I was so sad to hear the news about Ivy. I was the dietitian that worked with her in the meal replacement program though Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was a wonderful person and fun participant in our group. I think of her often because I still share her recipes with new group members from "Ivy's Low Calorie Creative Eatery". She always added comments at the end to "enjoy with the sunday newspaper and cup of hot tea", or another tidbit.I will be sad now when I share these recipes with others. She is having a wonderful time now in heaven and it will be the blink of an eye and all will be together forever.

To The Locke Family, I know that no one can replace her in your hearts, but know that we thank you for sharing her with us, if for only a brief time. She gave of herself and loved her adopted home of Rhode Island. I will miss her not only as my boss but as a friend.

Ivy was a living representative of Christ on Earth. She had a way of lifting people up, focusing them on the real issue or concern in their lives and then pointing them to the true source of strength....God. I loved to go into her office at Southeast and absorb all of the Feng Shui and good carma that was their. She was a great source of strength to us all. She lives on in each of us whose life she touched. Know that her profound depth of understanding of God was a truly great witness surpassed only by Christ.

We will always remember her Christmas Parties, caroling, and her special kindnesses to Bob's Father, her Valentine's "date."

Blessings to her family.

To the Lockes: My heartfelt prayers and blessings.

I will always feel Ivy's joyful presence and hear her laughter at Conimicut Point and all those Rhode Island "spots" we shared on our Saturday outings.

She was such a beautiful child of God. Truly compassionate, playfully loving, a bubbly, bright light! I am so blessed to have had her in my life.

Shine on, Ivy!

To the Locke Family,
May God look upon you with strength and encouragement. Knowing that Ivy contributed to this earth in a positive manner, her living was not in vain. She has finished her course and God has received her to Himself. Please be encouraged and know that you birthed a jewel into this world, the world benefitted from it, and she has left her mark. I am proud to say that she was a classmate of mine at Douglass which puts a smile on my face to know that she left a great, positive, and everlasting impact in the lives of others. May heaven smile on this family.

"I am a child of God and Thomas and Arminta Locke!" Ivy would often say this to keep her perspective during the stressful times in life. She reminded me that I was a child of God too. I will always be grateful for that.

I am blessed to have been friends with her. To the Lockes: God Bless you. You are in my prayers.

To the Locke family - I would like to extend my deepest condolences during this time of bereavement. You may feel sad, you may want to cry - and it IS fine to do so - that's why God gave us emotions; but just know that God has her now and that's the best place for her to be.

I was so saddened to hear of Dr Locke's passing. I worked at Southeast Missouri State University also and never would I ever run into her that she did not have that big infectious smile on her face. Dr. Locke helped me to transition from one department to another on campus at a time when I needed a change. She did all she could to keep me upbeat and positive. She will be truely missed.

Like so many others, I too was saddened to learn of Ivy's untimely passing. We worked together at Southeast Missouri State, but I got to know her better after she joined the Cape Girardeau West Rotary Club of which I am also a member. She was active in our club and contributed signficantly to our efforts, and perhaps more importantly, to our fellowship. She was always upbeat and pleasant, and she has been missed here already. God must have needed a special angel to have taken her from us so soon.

It was an honor for me to work with Ivy as her counselor at Frederick Douglass High School. I watched her grow and develop from the eighth through her senior year. I remember her beautiful smile. I remember her keen intelligence and her loving spirit. It was a joy to work with her. I am glad that God gave me the opportunity to have her in my life. My sincere sympathy is extended to her family. I only regret that I did not tell her how proud I was of her during the class reunion that I attended!

Ivy was a warm, principled and sparkling person and her presence made a real difference at Rhode Island College where we were colleagues. While Ivy was at Southeast Missouri State University, I had the opportunity to spend time with her. She was very delightful, insightful and caring. It is hard to find the right words to convey my sadness for your loss. Our loving God however, has given us the resurrection hope, which is a comfort. I pray that you too find comfort in his word at Rev. 21:3-5

It was my pleasure to work with Dr. Locke when she served at Southeast Missouri State University. We once locked ourselves out of a car in a cemetary in the middle of winter. We did not have coats on and waited 45 minutes for someone to rescue us. She always laughed and even laughed over this. Remarkable. I miss her.

March 29, 2010

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ivy's death this morning. We were colleagues at Southeast Missouri State University. I know that she helped to inspire many during her time at Southeast. Our prayers are with her family.

I had the pleasure of calling Ivy a dear friend many years ago when she lived in Atlanta. She was a blessing in my life. We had lost touch recently, but that kind of friendship never ends. I am sorry for her passing. The world will be a darker place without her beautiful, bright smile. I know that she has received her crown of glory with our loving Father.

I am fortunate to have known Ivy and to have worked as a member of her staff at Rhode Island College for four years. The fruits of her work at the College and the lives she touched will be an Ocean State legacy that will persist. She had warmth, charm, and a kind heart. She often spoke of her family, who meant so much to her, and she always asked about the families of her staff members. With deepest sympathy.
