J.D. Holloway Obituary

Jarrell Dean "J.D." Holloway, age 88, died at home in Columbus, MS, on Feb. 14, 2010. Services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home, with Minister Archie Taftlinger and Minister Larry Ferguson officiating, burial with military honors will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Col. Holloway was born March 26, 1921, in Timpson, Texas, to the late Eva Lena and James Dudley Holloway. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his seven siblings. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marion Elizabeth Keith Holloway; son Jarrell Dean Holloway, Jr. and wife Nicki of Columbus, Ohio; daughter Karen and husband Dr. Jerry Holleman of Charlotte, NC; daughter Ann Ferguson and husband Vint of Columbus, MS; grandchildren Jeremy Holleman and wife Wisty of Knoxville, TN, Chris Holleman of Berkeley, CA, and Scott Holleman and wife Kana of New York, NY; grandchildren Josh, Lauren and Zach Ferguson of Columbus, MS; great-grandchildren Owen and Henry Holleman of Knoxville, TN. Col. Holloway joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. During 23 years of service, Col. Holloway traveled to 50 foreign countries. During World War II he served in the 15th Air Force as a navigator on B-17 (heavy) bombers and flew 50 combat missions in Europe. He received numerous military awards, including the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Stars, Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Europe-Africa Mid-East Medal, and presidential citations from Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. During his military career, Col. Holloway attended Furman University, Univ. of Maryland and MSU studying Military Science and Mathematics. After retirement from the U.S. Air Force, Col. Holloway worked for the City of Columbus as Tax Assessor and Collector, City Marshall and Building Official. Mr. Holloway was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as an elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a member of the Columbus Kiwanis Club, Military Officers of America, and the Air Force Association. His son and grandsons will serve as active pallbearers Honorary pallbearers will be the Elders. Deacons and members of First Christian Church, Dr. Michael Duckworth, Dr. Bart William, and Dr. Robert Howland. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Christian Church 811 N. McCrary Road Columbus, MS 39702.

What a dear man he was! I express my sincerest sympathy to Marion, children, grandchildren, and great grans. I look forwrd to his smiles and hugs througout all eternity.

Karen and Jerry,

I am so sorry to hear of Col. Holloway's passing. I returned home and heard a notification via a voice mail message 10 minutes ago.

Karen, I know that your dad was proud of you and your many accomplishment. Also, your children must have given him much joy.

Max and I offer prayers and sympathy for you and Jerry.

Always a hug and smile ... never met him when I didn't get both!! He was a blessing to my children and me growing up at First Christian. His love for his Lord, his family and his church will long be remembered! Rest in Peace, J.D. your work is just beginning!! D.Scogin.
