Jack COWIN Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Oct. 6, 2014.
COWIN, Jack Lee
Jack Lee Cowin left his loved ones and friends on September 24, 2014 in Arlington Heights, Illinois. During his time on earth, he touched the lives of many people - from loved ones and friends, to colleagues and students. He did this through his work and the sheer nature of his kind and humble personality. Jack was deeply connected to the natural world; his work reflected that and ultimately defined him. His attention to detail and precision made every subject take on a personality and character of its own. Jack's teachings inspired many students at the University of Regina. Countless numbers of his students have gone on to pursue careers in Fine Arts. Those who haven't at least have a greater understanding and appreciation because of his curriculum and passion for the arts. Although losing Jack has left a void in the lives of those around him, we will always have his beautiful works that will continue to inspire and be admired for generations to come. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and teacher, he always gave everything he could to those around him and would often put the needs of others before those of his own. He was known to donate to a wide variety of charities and organizations and established two scholarships at the University of Regina. Jack is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary; his two sons, Noah (Jen) and Jeremiah (Jennifer); grandchildren, Anika, Shannon, and Bridget; numerous relatives and friends, colleagues, and, last but not least, his loyal dogs, Otis, Georgia, and Nellie. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask that donations be made in his name to the Humane Society, or Ducks Unlimited. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014 at Holy Rosary Cathedral. A Memorial Service will follow at the Holy Rosary Hall from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A witty, intelligent and dedicated teacher. So glad I had taken some classes from Jack and experienced his enthusiasms, advice, humour and deep concern for his students.

When teaching, Jack used many funny sayings about Art, such as "If it's gold, it's sold" (referring both to his use of gold-leaf on his prints and also his real concern to convery to us that artists can be commercially successful).

His wonderful images are inspiring examples of his love of nature and his tender regard for so many of the animals he depicted, such as his beloved spaniels and labs.

I'll miss you, Jack.

Our condolances to you Mary and family. We are so sorry that we missed Jacks memorial but our deepest thoughts and sympathies are extended to you. Our time together was with the dog club and Jacks generous donations were greatly appreciated. He gave his time and loved the outdoors with the dogs. I will always remember Jack trying to sneak in a Doirito bag lunch before Mary could catch him and keep him on his diet. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time Mary.

Visits from Jack and Mary at Expressway were always great fun! Whether dropping off the girls (and Otis) for grooming or boarding, we always enjoyed a visit. Hearing of your travels to the States and all your adventures was always entertaining. Your gentle spirit will be missed, Jack. Definitely not forgotten.

You couldn't find two nicer people than Jack and Mary. American Thanksgiving at their house was always amazing. Jack was generous, humble, and interesting and he will be missed.

I was Jack's student back in the 90s, and many of my friends were printmakers who spent most of their time in the basement. Jack, I will always remember our chats about our dogs, and our mutual love of nature. You were fun to talk to and always had a funny/sarcastic story to share, and usually during those stories, we'd all end up with a fit of the giggles. Wherever you are, I hope the fishing and hunting is good. You will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.

How beautifully written. I was fortunate enough to take many classes with Jack. I learned so much about so much more than printmaking. He had such a giving soul. I have many wonderful memories. I will miss him. I know so many who will. My sincerest condolences for the loss to your family. I can only imagine the hole his passing will leave in your lives.

Mary and family. Hard to believe it has been something like 35 years since you moved next door at 2029 with your young family. Who were these americans anyway? You quickly became friends with my parents and were a big part of their lives until they passed. It was a comfort to know you and jack were right there if we needed something. We had the challenges of the spelliscy cats versus your dogs which was always fun to watch. And i still hear the calls for kaiser and winnie to come kin for the night. Many a cold night jack and i would pass eachother on the way to plug cars and vans in. And i always think of jack either on his way to his art sanctuary in your garage or seeing the light in the shop burning late into the night and could only imagine what wonderful work he was doing in there. You both were a big part of my memory bank over all of those years and we are proud to call you neighbours and friends. I wish you the best and the cathedral area will miss the two young americans who came and stayed to be fixtures in the community.

SO sorry to read this news. Jack was an unbelievable supporter of the holistic experience of a student. He was innovative, humble, engaging, creative, humorous and I was proud to call him my friend. Prayers to his family. Rest in peace Jack - you will be missed.

Jack Cowin, my former art professor has passed away. If you ever met him you'd know how I feel. Best prof ever and a real mentor. He was casual in nature and a real inspiration to anyone who was interested in art. All profs should be as good as he was. Jack you really were the best. May heaven be filled with free Coffee Crisps, real blues music and comfy shirts for you.

You were such a kind man, Jack, and a brilliant artist. You leave a "Jack-sized", bunny shaped hole in this world. Or, perhaps, it looks more like a fish? My thoughts go out to all Jack's family and friends
