Jack Hogan Obituary

Published by Chattanooga Times Free Press from Nov. 5 to Nov. 6, 2016.
Jack Harlon Hogan, 79, passed away from this life suddenly Thursday night, Nov. 3, 2016. He was born in Davidson, Tenn., but grew up in Bogart, Ga., a small town that he loved near Athens. He graduated from Lipscomb University in 1959, where he played varsity basketball for four years. To help pay for college, he taught and coached at Fair Play High School in South Carolina. After college, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps before settling in Chattanooga and meeting his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret Ann (Warrenfells) Hogan. He had a 36-year career at Provident Life & Accident Insurance Company serving as an officer in human resources. He was a Fellow of the Life Management Institute, teaching his family during his career about the simple things in life that are often forgotten; hard work, a firm handshake, treat others the way you want to be treated and above all, keep God and family first. Upon retirement, he and Margaret moved to a small farm in Pikeville, Tenn., where they were adopted into a wonderful community, with Jack serving as the chairman of the Bledsoe County Senior Center. He served in the Church of Christ as an elder at both Brainerd in Chattanooga and Bethel in Pikeville. Over many years, he preached at several churches in the Southeast. Besides his faith and family, he loved antiques, western movies, military history and the Georgia Bulldogs. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bedford Chester and Jessie Alene Anderson Hogan. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; three sons, Joey (Joy) Hogan, of Chattanooga, Andy (Amy) Hogan, of Atlanta and Barry Hogan, of Pikeville; five grandchildren, Ben (Sarah) Hogan, Drew Hogan, Matthew Hogan, Conner Hogan and Gracie Hogan; two stepgrandchildren, Matthew White and Megan Raney; two brothers, Donald (Frances) Hogan and Larry (Ellen) Hogan. The funeral will be today, Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Hixson, Tenn. Visitation hours will be from noon to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boyd-Buchanan School and the Bledsoe County Senior Center.

Margaret and family,

Charles and I are so sorry for your loss. Jack was a special person. We loved his commitment to the Lord, his love for you and family, his wonderful sense of humor and the love of people he shared.

We know he will be sadly missed by you, Margaret, and his family. The church at Bethel has lost a great inspiration and Christian example.

We will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Love,
Charles and Betty Jo Smith

We have really good memories of our time attending church with Jack and Margaret. We, along with everyone else, were shocked to hear of his passing. Isn't it comforting to know that he is "Safe in the Arms of Jesus?"

What a wonderful Father-in-law I was blessed with for 32 years! Since Jack never had a sister or a daughter before I came along, I think I blew his mind from time to time! Giving him a grand daughter 11 years ago was the best thing ever! He loved watching a little girl grow and change. Her heart and mine is broken that he is gone, but we both know he is watching over us from above! We will always love you dearly, PawPaw Jack!!

Jack and I were close friends from elementary school thru high school at Bogart. We spent time together nearly every day during the summer break. Of the 5 or 6 guys that were always together we all recognized that Jack was the "good" guy and a positive influence. It was always a pleasure to be with him except in a sports competition - he was always a gifted athlete. I will miss his updates on current events relating to Bogart and about the friends that we had in common. Again Thanks For The Memories.

Jack and I were very close buddies in college and spent too much time in the gym, but having the best time together. We have kept up with each other, especially in the past few years. I will miss Jack very much but I am confident of his safe abode. He loved God and the Savior and was led by the Spirit. What consolation in this time of weeping and profound sadness. Blessings to Margaret and all the children and friends. Ed and Joy Binkley

Jack and I grew up in the same small Georgia town and shared the same memories and love of the way we were raised. He was a superior athlete and above all, a gentle and kind man with great love for his family and God. Rest in peace old friend, you will never leave us.

So sorry to hear this. Jack and Margaret have been some of our family's oldest friends. Joey and Andy are probably the first friends Alan and I can remember. Haven't seen them for years, but always enjoy Jack's forwarded emails and Facebook posts. He will be missed.
