Dr. Jack Hough--thank you for teaching my dad, thank you for being instrumental in moving my family to Oklahoma from San Diego, thank you for giving your life in service during WWII and to helping people hear, some for the first time. Thank you for following Jesus and for the legacy you have left in OKC, HEI, and all over the world. You will be sorely missed here. Now you are truly knowing and getting to see face to face the One who fashioned the ear. We love you.

Jack Hough, whose friendship I have been privileged to enjoy for around 50 years, has been an absolute source of inspiration to me.In our numerous talks together in Oklahoma,Scotland and elsewhere, Jack confessed to me that during the horrific battle in the Pacific while in war service, he promised God that if he came through alive, he would devote his life to Him. But how many of those in danger have made similar promises and failed to keep them?
But Jack remained true to his promise and became a wonderful disciple with God at the centre of his life. Following his return to civilian life, in his early days as a young otologist he was presented at a medical conference with a prestigious award for his work on the ear: courageously he decided that he must acknowledge publicly God's help and the part that He played in his life. From then on we all knew where Jack stood in his relation to God and his fellow men.
Not only was Jack a great Christian but his skill as an ear surgeon was second to none. I have travelled round the world watching famous ear surgeons and there have been none more skillful than Jack Hough. Many of my own techniques have been derived from what I learned in Oklahoma but I never came near to equalling Jack's wonderful surgical skill.
Jack's clinic was unique as the staff were true Chistians who cared for the patients with prayerful devotion giving them confidence and a sense of security.
My thoughts go to his lifelong Christian companion Jodie and to all the family

Dear Hough family,
It's doubtful you remember me as an intern at Presb Hosp in OKC back in 68-69. One day many of you took me up to Eagle Lake, and we hiked down those seven beautiful miles together, Punchbowls and all! Dr. Jack was a kindly mentor during my year in OK, and he let me watch as he performed a couple or more ear procedures at Presb.
I'm winding up 50+ yrs in medicine, having served over half that time as medical consultant for the Navs International here in Colo Springs. You and Jack helped me get my start. Thanks and praise God !!

I first met Dr. Hough in 1961 when I was diagnosed with a hearing loss and saw him periodically throughout my life. He always told me that one day I would be able to get a cochlear implant and that by the time I needed one, it would help me hear much better. In 2001, when I was scheduling my first cochlear implant, he was working on an implantable hearing aid and another surgeon did my implant. I now have two implants, and the level of hearing I experience is truly a miracle. I have always been touched by the level of caring he provided, by his support of the Hearing Loss Association and even by the Christian literature in his waiting room. He was certainly someone to look to as an example of "let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven". My heart goes out to his family.

Dr. Hough was a very special man and am so sorry the world and especially his family has to suffer his loss. I was fortunate to have his hands perform surgery on me and give me a precious quality of life I would not have otherwise. My dear husband was also fortunate to receive hearing from surgery Dr. Hough performed, also. We were always grateful Thank you for sharing his talent and expertise with us..Sincerely, Mrs. James Dycus

Dearest Family of Dr. Jack Hough,
I join with so many others who knew Dr. Hough in offering my deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.
Dr. Hough saved my life twice during the first 11 months here on earth. Most of the following information came from parents, Bruce and Billye Howard, who have since passed. It is possible that their spirits have visited with Dr. Hough's spirit this past week.
Following Bruce and Billye's four-year-old son's (Kent) death from croup in 1949, I was born. From the beginning, I also had croup problems just as my brother, the only 2 of 7 children who had croup. Because of Kent's early death, Bruce and Billye insisted on getting good doctors for me. They hired Dr. Neil Lysaught, an accomplished doctor, who arranged help from Dr. Jack Hough, another highly skilled doctor.
Dr. Hough performed two tracheostomies on me in December 1950 and April 1951. Following one of the tracheostomies, Dr. Hough approached my mother as he left the operating room. My mother said that Dr. Hough was perspiring from head to toe due to the hours spent saving my life. My mother thanked Dr. Hough for saving my life. Dr. Hough would not acknowledge that he saved my life. Instead, he told my mother that God had saved my life. Dr. Hough's statement, along with my healing, certainly strengthened my mother's faith throughout her entire lifetime.
I thank God every day for Dr. Hough's belief and faith in God. I feel that God saved my life through Dr. Hough's skilled tracheostomies. I am thankful for all those, including Dr. Hough, who gave me the faith to believe in a God that is well aware of my needs.
Reading the other comments shows that Dr. Hough shared his faith in God with others throughout his lifetime. What wonderful accomplishments!
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Dear Dr. Hough Family,
Son, Ted probably doesn't remember me but I was a student aid for him at NWC High School in 1969. I mispronounced his name the first time, bad on me. Dr. Hough was my Dad's ear doctor and was always very kind & patient. He was a truly great man.

Jack Hough's obituary brought back so many memories of an old friend we knew so many years ago. We remember him as a Christian friend and honor him as an outstanding Oklahoma ear surgeon. In recent years, our daughter Janet Galloway has become good friends with Jack and Jodie's daughter-in-law Donna Hough (married to Jack Jr.(Van), as they are both into Arabian horses. When our daughter Susie Wheeler (now Eubanks) was in high school, she was a member of a Christian singing group called "Opening Hours" with Tim Hough, another son, made up of young people from different churches.
It's been so long ago, but I (Mercedes) am associating Jack Hough with the first Billy Graham Crusade held in Oklahoma City, also with friends Minnie Lou and Bob Jessup, who were Republicans and a "Belle for Bellmon" but also worked for Democrat Cleeta John Rogers when he won his Senate seat. I think we met Jack and Jodie through Minnie Lou and Bible Studies and other activities we were invited to, such as a Dinner-Dance once. Al felt a special bond as he too is a graduate Chemist.
When Janet was a teenager, we agreed to buy her a riding horse and I took her out to Jack Hough's ranch near Yukon where he had a herd of beautiful Arabian horses. Jack and Janet and I walked down into the pasture and he sold us Janet's first horse, Farwa Lane, a brood mare with a colt at her side Tamarzon and bred back to a pure bred registered Arabian stallion Ferzon from an old English blood line. I've forgotten how much we paid, but Jack told us we could pay her out in payments however we wanted over a period of time.
When I first started having trouble with my hearing, I went to Jack Hough for my first hearing test and fitting with hearing aids. When he retired, I still went to his clinic Hough Ear Institute with Dr. Dyer as my doctor. Dr. Dyer is the one who noticed my misaligned septum (caused by car accident) and operated to repair it, the best corrective surgery I ever had.
Jack Hough was one of the most amazing men we have known as a friend in our lifetime. His obituary tells the incredible story of his contribution to so many whose lives he touched. He is another of our generation who has left this world a better place because he lived. He was a deep thinker and great Christian. We still have a copy of his booklet "Science, Philosophy, and Religion" he passed out to patients and friends. It was from an address he gave as speaker at a Phi Beta Pi medical fraternity gathering.
I'm quoting the first few paragraphs:
"From a scientific standpoint, it is inconceivable to me that a thinking person would not believe in God. As a man, I look up and I wonder why the tremendous forces of the universe are held together in such perfect harmony: earths, planets, moons, stars, suns all balanced, rotating and moving in prescribed arcs in split-second timing in an order that has continued for an eternity. Furthermore, there seems to be perfection and power down to the smallest atom with its electrons and neutrons. The microscopic world is as perfect as the gross astronomical world. I think of the millions of blood cells now rushing through my body. They are carrying nutrition from my stomach and from my lungs to the uttermost parts of my anatomy, supplying each body cell precisely with exactly what it needs and removing its by-products and keeping it healthy so that it may perform its own individual purposeful activity.
"I say to you that there is not one chance in multiple billions that this world and you and I were put here and maintained by chance. To believe all this exists without a guiding creating hand of a supreme intelligence would require a fantastically blind and illogical mind.
"Let us read how the Bible leads us to the truth concerning the origin and purpose of life. Let us read the thesis statements in the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Verses 1 through 5.
"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
"May I pause here just a moment to state the "Word" translated into Greek is O'Logos. Now I shall reread the first verse here in the Gospel of John refers to the person of the man Jesus Christ. "In the beginning was O'Logos and O'Logos was with God and O'Logos was God" . . . The word O'Logos familiar in all Greek philosophy refers to the whole realm of thought. Now John said then, "In the beginning was the whole realm of thought and the whole realm of thought was with God and the whole realm of thought was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made." Al and Mercedes Wheeler, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Dear Dr. Hough and family, Dr. Hough has been an amazing demonstration of the Christian walk and how to treat others. My favorite lesson I learned from him was allowing others to save face when in a dissagreement. Dr. Hough's belief and faith in me made a huge positive impact on my life and my walk with God. He left so many people transformed. Best wishes and blessings.

The scriptures that Jack loved so well and used as the rulebook in the conduct of his professional and spiritual life, tell us that our life is just a mist but we believe Jack's time on earth swelled into an ocean spray, showering his love, friendship and commitment over all God brought his way. And that ocean spray created waves that grew into a tsunami spreading the message of Jesus Christ from the United States to continent after continent. With Jodie by his side, he invested the special gifts, acclaim and provisions, provided by God, to be loving and special friends to people all over the globe. He will be greatly missed but we rejoice that God has given him his Psalm 17:15 wish.

Praise God for the gift that was Jack Hough! Dale and I are both so grateful and will never forget the sustaining guidance and life-long lessons he and Jodie lent to us years ago before we were married and for all of the love and laughter they have shared over the years; not just with us, but with all of their "extended" family and friends as well. That kind of love and laughter spreads and catches like wildfire! What a gem; truly one of the Lord's saints. God Bless the Hough Family at this special time.

He'll always be Uncle Jack to me. :) I'm so grateful that God brought our families together. Due to Uncle Jack's passion for disciplining men in Christ, there are four generations of believers in our family. When Dad started meeting regularly with Jack in 1964 (or 65), he came to know the Lord ... which led to my becoming a Christian ... which led to Wes's and my children coming to a relationship with Jesus ... which has led to our first granddaughter Amelia accepting Christ as her Savior. How grateful our family is for Uncle Jack's heart for Jesus and his heart to share Jesus with others. We're a part of his legacy. Much, much love to all of the Hough family ...

Dear Jodie,
In my years at MAP I saw a great man of God with a servant's heart who inspired others. His humble spirit and honorable character are hard to find in our world. What a great loss. I know you have that same spirit and we all look forward with anticipation to the great day when we will be united again! Much love, Ellen Post

I am very saddened to hear of Dr. Hough's passing. Dr. Hough was a family friend, and he was like a grandfather to me. I will never forget the kindness and generosity he showed my family when we first moved to Oklahoma, when my mother Dr. Gan joined HEI. His love and compassion knew no bound. He was an amazing man who lived a remarkable life. More importantly, he was a true Christian, one of the greatest men I've ever met. I am grateful for the privilege of knowing him while he was with us. He will forever live on in our thoughts and memories. I send my deepest sympathy to Jodie and the entire Hough family at this difficult time. May God be with you and bless you.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Hough's passing. I remember the first memory verse from the 2:7 class and the way Jack presented it. 1 John 5:11,12. Jack started quoting the verses and laid his pen between the pages of his bible at the start of 12 and removed it as he finished. He used his pen to illustrate that God has given us eternal life in his son (the word) and that he who has the Son has life, he who does not have the son does not have the life (Jack removed his pen from his bible). That lesson will stick with me forever. Thank you Jack.

Dr. Hough was my "HERO" and I will always be grateful to Dr. Hough for helping change my life for the better!! I was one of the first 20 people in Oklahoma to get the Soundtec Direct Drive System (now the Ototronix Maxim). I was involved in the experimental stages and the first to have both ears receive the Soundtec Direct Drive System. Dr. Hough definately changed my life. Heaven rejoiced when Dr. Hough came through that door to be with our Lord and Savior. Dr. Hough will be greatly missed. Judy Gray

Dear Family, Friends and colleagues of Jack Hough,
Jack was a wonderful friend to many of us and he was a very dear friend of mine. He was a wonderful human being and a wonderful Otologist and a wonderful Christian. We shall all miss him but we know that he is Chief of the Otological society in Heaven. He has made many contributions to our field, which we are all fully aware of and he was such a genuine human being that we were privileged to have known him for the pass decades.
I was with him at many meetings where I always felt a feeling of warmth and appreciation for a wonderful Christian human being and great contributor to the field of Otology in so many ways.
Treva and I send our prayers and best wishes to his family and friends and colleagues, since I know we shall all miss him very much but rejoice in the fact that we have had the privilege of knowing him for so many moments in time.

I convey my condolences on the death of Dr. Hough. On two occasions I had the opportunity to visit the Institute in Oklahoma City. I was greeted with affection and knowledge received have been used for the benefit of patients who have had the opportunity to treat over my career.

In 1964 at the age of 16 I drove my dad; Rev. L.R.Helms from Soper,Okla. for Dr. Hough to perform surgery on dad's ears; he was almost deaf. Dad was able to hear until his death at 83; at which time he was still pastoring. Dad and Dr. Hough had many great discussions about the Lord. In my library I have Dr. Hough's publications to this day. I will always be grateful for the impact of Dr. Hough on my family and for thousands of others.

Dr. Hough had such an impact on my life. When I was dating my husband long distance he provided a job and John and I could at least be in the same state. As a result, the relationship blossomed and we were able to be married. He'd always prayed that God would send him the right employees. Thank you Dr. Hough for praying for me before you knew me and then continuing after I was your employee. You were a wonderful example of a most gracious employer.

I am so sad to read that Dr. Hough passed away and at the same time had such profound feelings of joy that I was privileged to know him. Had it not been for Dr. Hough, I would have been deaf most of my life. He operated on me 4 times in the 1960s and 1970s. I have been a patient from 1964 to today. After the last surgery in 1972 I remember hearing birds singing and coins jingling - things never heard before. God bless you Dr. Hough and prayers for your family.

Dear Jodie and family,
Please accept both my sincere condolences and abiding confidence of Jack's home-going for a life of everlasting joy with his Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ Himself. I will forever treasure working together with you and Jack in Prison Fellowship along with my friend Mike Fisher. Additionally, of course, is how grateful I am for his having been, not only my Doctor, but my parents', Lois and Virgil Thomas' Doctor for many years as well. Absolutely the best! What competency and professionalism.... His life, priorities and values are best expressed by the Scripture he chose to be etched on his very own tombstone. I look forward, God willing, to seeing you all at the services planned for later this week.

Dr. Hough had an impact on our family for three generations. It started before I was born 52 years ago with Jack and Jodie sponsoring a couples Bible study that involved my parents, Bob and Minnilou Jessup. He was very much a godly influence to them and great role model. I remember my parents speaking of him fondly as I grew up and how intelligent he was in spiritual matters and in the medical field. I remember the Hough's being at our house when I was young and how fascinated I was when he described with passion how God had made the human body and how it relates to the inner ear. Dr. Hough spoke at their memorial service sharing about their long and fruitful friendship.
My spiritual growth took a tremendous leap during a group Bible Study under Jack and Jodie at Covenant Community Church. I treasure the memories and friendships from those 2 years.
Dr. Houghs influence continued with my wife working with him for over 13 years at the Hough Ear Institute. Perma says she has never been so blessed to be on the receiving end of such wisdom and grace.
Finally, the third generational influence is with my daughters one who is named for Jack and Jodie's youngest son David A. Hough who introduced us 15 years ago on November 1, 1997.
On behalf of Bob and Minnilou, my wife, daughters and myself we say thank you, Dr. Hough, for being a godly role model for all of us and your legacy will be with us for the rest of our lives.

It was a long sad moment the one we heard about the news that not only our medical mentor but also a dear friend has passed away. Its not a new news how much Prof. Jack has added to medicine yet from him I learn more than just being a good doctor, I had the chance to live with him and his lovely wife Jodie during 2000, I have shared food, laughs and learned from him forgiveness, faith, work ethics and how you can be as great as him yet this down to earth.
I knew Jack the father, the grandfather and how considerate he is when he had a chest pain at night, refused to wake me up and the next day I found his grandson calling me saying that the prof was worried I will not find a way to reach the hospital because he cant drive me there.
I knew Jack the mentor, the god father and the ENT guru, who made sure I never leave the operation room without a new learning and a higher self-confidence, who made sure to involve me in the most interesting cases. I cant be exaggerating if I say that the impact of him has escalated the level of ENT in Jordan considering he took it his job to train and host as many Jordanian doctors as he can and joining us whenever he could here in Jordan for medical and educational events.
In Arabic we have a saying that means who ever gave birth to a son or wrote a book will never be forgotten, Prof. Jack was both. May his soul rest in peace

Dear Dr. Hough:
We truly believe that you and Mrs. Hough loved us (internationals) like one of your own children! You had also invested your life in our life and had taught us how to "walk with the Lord." In January 2004, you gave us a copy of the One-Year Bible as a gift. You also hand-wrote the scriptures "Psalm 119:10-11" on the second page of that Bible and signed "Dr. Jack & Jodie Hough." You would be glad to know that we still read from that very same Bible today! November 1, about 50 plus years ago was an important day for me(Yai), because it was the day that I entered into this world. November 1, 2012 was another glorious day for us to rejoyce because it was the day that you had entered into the presence of the Loving Lord.
Dr. Hough, we are not saying good bye, because we will see you again later. By faith in the Lord Jesus Chirst, we know for sure that we will see you again in His presence some day.
In Jesus' Love,
