He was the Chief of Surgery and Head of the Cardio-Thoracic Department at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in his final active years, I believe retired around 2003-2004. He was my mentor, and my boss. Once, we did three coronary bypass bac-to-back in one after noon; he handed me over the needle-holder. " You operate, Operate, like there's no tomorrow."
Once, he invited his father, Willhelm, to speak about his inventions of artificial organs, as he was the inventor of the dialysis machine. Jack was a genius, a brilliant man, amazing heart surgeon, amazing friend, absolutely wide area of knowledge about science, medicine, history. Oh, yes, so, we operate, and he had a dictaphone and a mic, dictated the case, then... during surgery, into the mic, called his secretary, " send a hundred red roses to my wife...", incredible, loved his wife, children, surgery, and life. RIP. Csaba Mihaly

Both being from 1938 my cousin Jack and I were big pals in the days of our early youth. He living at Kampen and I living in Amsterdam during the war was irrelevant.
Staying with the Kolff family was always great fun. Of course more so after the war than during, since so many more things were possible. Cycling tours, rowing at the Beulaker and the Belter Wiede, two lakes near Kampen, always exciting. Maybe even more exciting was the moment, shortly before Jack and Adrie left for the US in 1950, that we confided in each other that we both were in love with Tante Jet, the wife of one of Jack´s father´s brothers.
It was a great occasion to meet again in 1953, when my mother and I spent the summer in Cleveland. Still big pals. Over the years contacts became less of course, with the ocean between us and each living in his own world. Remarkably enough, we saw relatively little of each other when Jack and Pat and the children lived at Leyden for some two years in the late seventies. Each of us may have been far too busy.
When Annebet came into my life, we regularly participated in family festivities like Janke´s 80th birthday, Janke´s and Pim´s 60th anniversary and Jeffrey´s wedding. In Villa Nova, the Adirondacks and in Cleveland. Pim´s memorial was a very special occasion. Jack stayed with us at the Mozartkade regularly, with Pat or with brother Therus. We are fond of these memories!
We always telephoned each other with our birthdays. Jack always spoke Dutch and I must say he did quite well.
Pat, Jeffrey, Tara, Courtney, you had an unforgettable husband and father!
