Jack Heatherly "Trey" Lefler III

Jack Lefler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 24 to Nov. 25, 2007.
LEFLER, JACK HEATHERLY, III "TREY" - age 25 of Loudon and Nashville, passed away Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2007 with family and friends surrounding him at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Trey was a proud, lifelong member of The Episcopal Church. He was currently employed as State Field Representative for the Lamar Alexander for U.S. Senate 2008 campaign, headquartered in Nashville. Prior to that he worked as an aide in U.S. Senator Alexander's office in Washington, D.C. as well as in the office of Jeffrey J. Kimbell and Associates, and as a summer intern for U.S. Senator Bill Frist. While in Washington D.C. he served as a board member of the Capital Club of Washington, a mentor in the "Everybody Wins" reading program, a founding member of the Capitol Entertainment Group, and as a utility player for the Chiefs Softball Team. Trey was a Valedictorian of the Loudon High School Class of 2000. He was a captain of the mighty Redskins football and basketball teams, a member of the 4-H program, and the recipient of several honors recognizing leadership and service including the Henry Blackburn Football Award as well as the D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) Good Citizen distinction. Trey was a proud graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee where his parents, stepfather and numerous family members attended. At Sewanee, Trey was a Highlander, a "ninja" and a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and the Order of Gownsmen. He was captain of the Sewanee Tigers Basketball team. During his college years he participated in the St. James Pilgrimage to Santiago, Spain and an outreach trip to Kingston, Jamaica. Trey Lefler was larger than life and cannot be captured in words. He loved the Lord, he loved his family and friends, he loved his state and country, and he loved the Alabama Crimson Tide. He modeled his life after the second commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39). As a natural extension of Trey's loving and generous spirit, he chose to be an organ donor and through his death is saving the lives of at least five others. Trey is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Rev. John G. Clarkson, Jr. and paternal grandmother, Josephine Smith Lefler. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Tweetie and Edwin White, Hopkinsville, KY; father, Jack H. Lefler, II, Loudon; sister, Laura Lefler, Washington, D.C.; step siblings, Carter and Nick White, Hopkinsville, KY; maternal grandmother, Mary Clarkson, Columbia, SC; paternal grandfather, Jack H. Lefler, Loudon; aunts and uncles, Martha Lee, Toronto, Canada, John G. Clarkson, III, Columbia, SC, Joe Clarkson, San Diego, CA, Joe Mourfield, Loudon and Jennie Norton, Birmingham, AL; loving girlfriend, Jane Hedges, Nashville; close pal and renaissance man, John Herzog, Washington, D.C.; and a multitude of great aunts, uncles, cousins and friends whom he adored. Graveside services will be at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, November 27th, Old Steekee Cemetery in Loudon, TN. The family will receive friends following the service at The Church of the Resurrection, Episcopal, 917 Pond Rd., Loudon from 1:30 - 4:00 PM EST. A celebration of Trey's life will take place on Wednesday, November 28th beginning with a memorial service at All Saints Chapel, University of the South, Sewanee, TN at 1:30 PM CST and a reception to follow at Convocation Hall. Contributions in memory of Jack H. Lefler, III may be made to his alma maters, Loudon High School, Loudon, TN and The University of the South, Sewanee or to the Ronald McDonald House of Nashville, where Trey volunteered his time. McGill-Karnes Funeral Home, Loudon.

Dear Laura,
I have cried for you. I have prayed for you. I have hurt so deeply for you. I have relived the loss of my own brother as I grieved the loss of your special Trey.
I was in Washington, D.C. when I received the news on Thanksgiving day. How I have longed to reach out to you, but I have been unable to locate any of your contact information.
Trey was always so special. I remember when I was a senior at Loudon and he was in 8th grade, I told him he was going to be something great one day.
As I think about your loss and the way in which it happened, I long to let you know that while the circumstances were different, two years ago I sat in the same hospital, saying similar prayers and pleading with God for my brother Joseph to live. Your eulogy for Trey captures so many of my same feelings toward Joseph.
For six of the longest days of my life, we sat at UT hospital waiting and hoping.
God had a different plan in mind. There is a song by a Christian group (Casting Crowns) called "I Will Praise you in this Storm" that has been so special to me during my grieving process.
I would so love to connect with you when you are ready. I think we could really offer support and encouragement to one another in a situation that not just anyone can relate to.
Please contact me at [email protected] when you feel like talking.
Much love, Lori (Potter) Booth

Jack, Tweetie & Laura,
I am so sorry that we have lost our boy Trey. He was a "Keeper". I have many fond memories of him. His first year at 4-H Camp and his sheep project were my favorites! He grew into the kind of young man that makes me so proud. Our 4-H family will miss Trey. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Trey and I first met on one of my trips up to Sewanee when visiting my friends Courtney, Ginger and Read. You could immediately tell by his energy and love for life that Trey was a great guy and friend to so many. I am happy to have been one of them.
I will always remember the times we shared together and our love for Alabama Football.
My thoughts and prayers will be forever with you.

Lives are lived in the beats of the heart and soul and not in days. We become a part of the people we love and who love us; in that sense we remain despite the accident of days, spaces, time, and space. May Trey always be that loving force felt in your heart when you extend gentleness, kindness, and love. May you always see him in the lives gained through his generousity and friendship. And, at thanksgiving time -- may you be able to thank God for arms strong enough to hold him and you though the dark valleys of life when even a candle's flame is so welcomed and gives light for the path. You remain in an old stroked-out cripple's heart and soul. God give you the assurance of love, care, and provision.

Jack, Tweetie, Laura, and Joanie,
I just had a dream of Trey. I think it was my way of getting to say goodbye to him for now. He was in my dream as I will always remember him, bright, warm and beautiful! I am sorry I was unable to make it to his arrangements. I just wanted all of you to know that he will be missed by so many and touched the lives of so many, including mine. My prayers are with all of you.

Tweetie, Laura, and Jack,

I wish so very much that I could have said this in person at Trey´s services, but this will have to suffice until I can see each of you in the future (we move back to the states in Dec.).
My deepest sympathy and love goes out to you during this time of loss and grief, and I am sending you all my love and support from afar.
Trey was one of the most gracious and joyful people I have ever known, and that is true for all of your family. I have so many fond memories of him both from Loudon and at Sewanee, and ironically those happy memories are what bring me to tears in these days following his death. Trey exuded such vibrant energy and joy that touched so many people´s lives profoundly.
I know that the grace and love that characterizes each of you will give you (and the rest of us touched by Trey´s remarkable spirit) the strength to deal with this shocking loss.

I love and miss you all,
Angela

My fondest memory is of Trey sneaking into my classroon during UT/Bama week before school and absolutely covering my desk with BAMA momentos and Roll Tide written all over the board. He was a very lovable and special young man. He will be missed!

Time is the only thing that will hear your hearting hearts. We lost a family member in a car accident, so we do truly empathize with Tweety and Laura.

Thoughts and prayers are with you,
