Jack New Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2012.
Jack Propps New, 74, joined his heavenly Father on January 7, 2012, at Lighthouse at Altenheim Hospice in Round Rock, Texas. His girls were all with him. Jack was born February 24, 1937, in Cushing, Oklahoma to Eston and Corrine (Propps) New. As a young boy, he moved to Texas with his family. He grew up in Gilliland, Texas and attended school in Munday. He loved spending time with his grandparents, Jack and Eron Propps, out on the ranch where they worked and lived. He learned to work hard and do his best during this time. He married Venta Mae Baty after graduating from high school. They were blessed with a daughter, Linda. He lovingly cared for Venta Mae during her battle with cancer. After her death, he met Katherine Ressel. They married in Seymour, Texas on June 4, 1965. They had a daughter, Nancy, the following year. Jack was a very talented and motivated man. He worked all over the state of Texas doing road construction. His work took him from Seymour to Harlingen where he worked for several years. During that time, Jack and Katherine added a daughter, Molly, to the family. In the early 70's, they moved to Seguin. He eventually formed his own paving business based in Geronimo. In 1982, another sweet girl, Katelyn, was born. The family stayed there until 1988. He worked in Andrews for a time after that. He and Katherine missed the hill country and moved to Liberty Hill in 1990. He worked for Capital Aggregates, retiring in 2005. Jack could do just about any job set before him. He could weld, mechanic, run paving equipment, drive trucks, run rock crushing operations or hot mix plants. He had a way of problem solving that often got the attention of people. He was sought out to help with problems. If he didn't know how to do something, he was willing to learn. He never shied away from a challenge. He worked hard and a lot, but he did love to have fun. He had a sharp sense of humor and loved to tease. He enjoyed anything outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to travel to beautiful places. Alaska was his favorite adventure. Jack was a 32 degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He quietly did many things to help others. He was raised in the Baptist faith. While in Seguin, he attended First Baptist Church. He always believed that it was important to serve God by serving others, and God put us here to work for Him. He had an appreciation for guns and old cars and antiques. He accumulated quite a few treasures over his lifetime. His finest collection was his family. He loved being with them. Many hours were spent sitting on the porch and visiting. He could never resist a hug or a Nerf gun battle with the grandchildren! He also enjoyed cooking for family gatherings. As he would gather them for meals, he would simply look up and humbly say, "Thank you, Lord." His family will cherish the legacy he left of being a man of integrity. We are grateful for the strength and bravery he quietly showed us during his illness. He didn't want anyone to feel sorry or do things for him. He would often remind us that "I'm a big boy and can do it myself." Well, Papa, "We'll see you down the road, good Lord willing." He is preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; his first wife, Venta Mae; father and mother -in- law, T.R. & Ruth Ressel; brother and sister-in-law, Dub and Jo Cartwright, and brother-in-law, Vollie Ressel. He is survived by wife of 46 years, Katherine; daughters and son-in-laws, Linda and Alan Corporon of Liberty Hill, Nancy and Ryan Jahns of Brenham, Molly and Zach Saffle of Paris, and Katelyn and Casey Bragewitz of Belton; grandchildren, Jaclyn Dillard, Jill Jahns, Ty Jahns, Meg Jahns, Todd Jahns, and Evan Saffle; brothers and sister-in-laws, Parker and Janice New of Pipe Creek, James and Vicky New of Alabama, and Lawrence and Ginger New of Amarillo; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and LaJuanda Ressel of Dickens; and sister-in-law Margaret Ressel; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special dog, Freckles. The family would like to thank Dr. Glen Preston at Cancer Care Center of South Texas in Marble Falls and "the girls", Tana ,Rose, Sarah, Dodi, Karina, and Grace, for the wonderful care they gave to Jack during his 3 ½ year battle with stage four cancer. We would also like to thank Lighthouse Hospice at Altenheim in Round Rock for making his last hours less painful. Honorary pall bearers will be Alan Corporon, Ryan Jahns, Zach Saffle, Casey Bragewitz, Steve Eckert, Ken Prince, Jerry McAden, Bud Lane, Brett Ballard, Art O'Mary, Gifford Champion, and Gene Champion. His nephews, Terry and Tracy Cartwright will lead the celebration. The family requests memorials to be made to Scottish Rite Children's hospitals, the Lighthouse at Altenheim Hospice in Round Rock, or the church of your choice.
