Jack POWELL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 23 to Oct. 24, 2013.
October 6, 1933 ~ October 19, 2013 Renowned Author, Lawman, Veteran, Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend, Jack Allen Powell, 80, of Roanoke, Va., passed away suddenly from a heart condition on Saturday, October 19, 2013, while mowing on his beautiful mountain property and instantly joined his Lord and Savior.
Jack was born in Roanoke and attended Morningside Elementary, Stonewall Jackson Junior High and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy for a four year tour of duty during the Korean Conflict, rising to the rank of Mineman 3rd Class Petty Officer.
He returned from serving his country to further serve his community as a law enforcement officer beginning as a Roanoke City policeman and then later as a Virginia State Alcoholic Beverage Control Enforcement Division Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge (ASAC). After 35 years of dedicated service he retired in 1995 from the ABC, but continued to pursue his passion in law enforcement as a private investigator and Federal Courtroom Security Office (CSO) in the U.S. Marshall Service until 2004.
After a lifetime of service as lawman and "Revenuer," Jack began writing down the accounts of his exciting and illustrious career. He is widely recognized as an accomplished author, public speaker and storyteller, having published five books on the history of Moonshining and police work. His book, "A Dying Art," was republished over the years in versions I, II and III, along with other works including a postcard history of moonshining and "Roadblocks to Success," a public relations guide for police work. He was also often seen on the Discovery Channel, History Channel and CMT as a consultant to documentaries and "reality" shows related to the history and eradication of moonshining.
Jack was a member and President of the Piedmont Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), a Free Mason, lifetime member of Belmont Baptist Church, and member of the U.S. Navy Mineman Association. His education included an AAS, BS, and LLB from Virginia Western Community College and LaSalle Extension Law Institute. He was also a 1981 graduate of the National FBI Police Academy, Session 126, Quantico, Va. Jack was also an expert marksman and loved the outdoors through his experiences in the mountains of Virginia as a revenuer.
Jack, a true renaissance man, held great pride in his marriage to his beautiful wife, Mary Wright Powell, and had just celebrated 55 years with her on the day before he passed away. He leaves behind a legacy of pride and joy in two beautiful daughters, their husbands, six wonderful grandchildren and countless friends and colleagues he touched throughout his life. He set a steadfast example of faith, family, and fun for everyone to follow. He lived life abundantly and was an inspiration to all as a true servant to others and great storyteller of his life's learnings. His family adored, admired, and loved him deeply.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Wright Powell, of Roanoke; daughters, Trenda Powell Jacocks, of Fairfax Station, Va., and Andra Powell McKown, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sons, Army Colonel John M. Jacocks, M.D. and Navy Captain Martin H. McKown Jr.; six precious grandchildren, Brittany Virginia Jacocks, of New York, N.Y., Martin Hayes McKown III, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mary Carter Jacocks, of Fairfax Station, Va., Air Force 2LT Connor Braxton McKown, of Del Rio, Texas, Army Cadet 1st Class Carson Lee McKown, of West Point, N.Y., and Air Force Cadet 4th Class Bailey Wright McKown, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and his nephew, Allen Powell, of Roanoke.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 25, 2013, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Manuel officiating, followed by Graveside Military and Police Honors at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jack's memory to the scholarship fund held by the FOP Lodge, Piedmont Chapter, Attention: Don Harris, 3324 Lipscomb Road, Moneta, VA 24121 or to Belmont Baptist Church, 825 Stewart Ave., Roanoke, VA 24013.
The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.Oakeys.com

Members of AOM were stunned to hear of our compatriot's passing. Jack was most beloved among our membership and, as a strong Christian and knowing that he suddenly went to the arms of Jesus, is a measure of comfort to us all. We pray the Lord will provide the measure of comfort to those who Jack left behind to ease the grief.

To Andre and the Powell family. I just read of your loss and it saddened me greatly. Although I left the neighborhood in the late seventies I think of you and your family often. As a kid I spent many hours near your home where we grew up and I recall seeing your Dad many times, always keeping an eye on us. I recently lost the only Dad that I knew and the loss is tragic, but rather continue to be saddened a flood of memories began to rise to the surface that helped to ease the sadness. As time passed some situation would trigger a thought and I would find myself smiling because they were always the good memories that we shared. I hope for something similar for you and your family.

Jack has meant so much to Franklin County Historical Society as a "character" on our Moonshine Express tours, a program presenter, bookseller and tale teller. I cannot begin to describe how we will miss him. Best wishes to all of you as you go forward without his unique take on life.

Mary, Trenda Andra and families, I am shocked at the news of your loss. Jack was always special to all of us, growing up in the neighborhood he watched out for all us kids, as adults he continued to make sure we were good kids and didn't make any stupid mistakes. In the 25 years I lived in Georgia, Jack took my husband under his wing hoping to find a law enforcement in Va. for him. Your dad continued to stay in touch because of their mutual interest in law enforcement and the military. The last time I saw him we chatted about his writings and the documentary that was out. He was such a wonderful mentor and friend. Amazing how one man can go from checking scrapped knees of the neighborhood kids who were learning to ride their first bikes, to watching us as we learned to drive. So few people, other than family follow your life from the day you move in to the neighborhood until you grow up and move away, even to the point of making time to chat when we came back to visit. The world has lost a very remarkable, caring, person who made the world a safer place for all of us. He will be missed by so many. Please know that all of you are in my prayers at this time. I know that nothing can fulfill the space left behind, I miss my dad and mom everyday, but the memories of all the wonderful things we did as children, the graduations, weddings, grands all some how make me smile more than bring tears. I pray that day will soon be like those, when memories will bring smiles, when you know what a wonderful man Jack was to a whole generation of people. Especially of all the neighbors that lived on Hartsook Blvd. back in the 60's. I see to all of you my love, prayers and condolences.
