Jack Ross Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 18, 2016.
Jack Neil Ross, a/k/a "Mr. North Miami Beach", touched the lives of thousands of people with his love and contributions. And that big grin! From the kids he coached and mentored, to the Optimist Club Members, to Special Olympics, to Big Brothers & Big Sisters, to bowlers everywhere, to the Lions Club, to the Footlighters Club, to AZA advisor, and to all he sang a 5 minute version of Happy Birthday to and to his work as the social director at various hotels on Miami Beach, Jack was everybody's best friend.
Jack is survived by his brother Alan (Susan) Ross; his nephew, Adam (Jessica) Ross; nieces, Melissa (KC) Sentz and Courtney (Joshua) Plager and 5 grandnieces and a grandnephew; by his longtime girlfriend, Sandy Rosen, and many dear and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his parents Milton Ross and Louise Brown Brandman. Jack, you truly will be missed...

Jack made a lasting impression on my life. His smile, his kindness, his humor, his magnificent voice, and his deep caring for his friends and family were unlike any other person. I met Jack at the Imperial club where he was an Acitivities Director and I was starting as one. He helped me tremendously sharing his knowledge of what was necessary to make the residents happy. He always went over and above not only for me, but for the residents whom he cared deeply about.
You know what they say, the "good die young" and he was too young and too good and we are all left with memories of his laughter and smile, which to this day, I will never forget.
RIP for ever Jack. I hope you are entertaining wherever you aree.

I met Jack in 1969 when he was the teen counselor at the Colonial Inn and I was at the Montmartre. He was a class act and role model to every social staff on the beach. I had not heard his name or thought about him in 40 years....but right now I have a million great memories of a wonderful young guy who I now see grew into a great man.

The sweet, sweet irony of naming a street after him! He and I recently had an extended philosophical conversation of Arthur Godfrey, The Kenilworth, and his real life experiences there.

City of NMB and Dade are to be commended for the wisdom of this resolution.

I have been trying to reach Jack for months. Had no idea. Completely stunned right now. We reestablished contact late and we would talk for hours on the phone. I hated to hang up. I always wanted to visit to give him a big hug. I will always regret I won't have that chance. He taught me so much during our conversations.

He was my Optimist Basketball coach and I was always happy to hear that he would be my coach. I would've run through a wall for him, and at Uleta I probably did. Just about every time I shoot baskets with my son, I think of Jack.

My Father and his Father were very dear friends, and Jack came over and set up my first 20 gallon fish tank. My Mother and Father adored him, and I grew to love him in his later years. The stories he would tell me! He was the only person on record to have beaten my brother Joe in an arm wrestling match! He said Joe's shocked expression was priceless.

I will terribly miss him. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Jack was my big brother for a few years in the late 70's. He taught me that spending money on a pinball machine was a waste of money and it would be better spent betting on Football. Seriously, he said that. He was a great guy and a true mentor. I saw him again in the early nighties and had a few drinks. Always the optimist.

I am so sorry to hear about Jack's passing. My deepest and most sincere sympathy go to his family and loved ones. Our 50th high school reunion was held this month and in looking for reunion pictures on facebook, I discovered that Jack had passed. Jack touched so many lives; and mine is definitely among them. We go way back. We grew up together. He was a fixture in my family home when we were kids and my Mom just loved him. I think she would have either adopted him or married him off to me or one of my sisters if she could have :) She settled for him coaching my brother's little league team. Thinking of him brings back so many warm memories of good times shared! Oh, the great times and friendships of those formative years... Chaperoned house parties, school dances, bowling, summers at the beach hanging out at the Colonial Inn, pizza at Marcella's, and yes, Jack was the boy that gave me my first kiss (I think we were 13). We've been in touch on and off throughout the years since high school and were able to catch up on our lives. It didn't matter how many years between contacts. Once I heard his voice it seemed like only yesterday since we'd last talked. I guess that's one of the blessings of a true friend. What I'll keep with me and always remember will be his wonderful smile, his fabulous voice, his generous heart, his love for others, his kind nature, and his caring spirit. Jack, I will truly miss you, my friend. You were such an uplifting and inspiring presence. You live on in the hearts of all those many, many whose lives you have touched. May you rest in peace.

I met Jack at the Aventura/NMB Lions Club. As I got to know Jack better I discovered that he was a very special person. For many years Jack was involved with the Optimist Club and was always ready to volunteer his time and help in anyway he could. Jack always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say. He will be missed at our Lions meetings with his endearing deep laugh. R.I.P. Lion Jack.

My condolences to Lion Jack Ross entire family. But for only a short time I was given the opportunity to meet and talk with Lion Jack, what an amazing moment in time. The information and unbelievable conversations shared will never be forgotten. A man of a million gifts to share with all. Jack was a GOD sent to many and it didn't take long to feel his love and friendship, something that was seen so vividly. Thank you Jack for being so transparent. SIP my friend...

Please continue to carryout his great attributes in your lives, so his memory lives on. Kathy Katerman.

I just recently met Jack on Christmas Day while I was staying at the Thunderbird Hotel. The last time I saw him was in '79 when I was vacationing with my family at the Colonial Inn. We had a wonderful conversation and we must have spoken to each other for over forty minutes while he was giving out eggnog. A few hours later he emerged as Santa Claus taking pics with anyone who wanted to come sit on his lap. It was a joy to be in his presence and rehashing stories how Miami Beach was back when times were a bit simpler in this complicated world we live in today. I will always remember Jack for the energy he had, always keeping the kids busy when he was the Social Director at Colonial Inn. We used to have a blast at that place. I am very saddened by his passing and my condolences go out to his family. The beach will never be the same without Jack round. RIP my friend.

Jack, you know I love you, your passing came to early. I can see Jack, up in heaven with his family and friends that passed before him looking down on us taking inventory of the food at his service. Jack and my wife, (may she rest in peace), looking down on us Jack saying to her, "look my funeral is standing room only" and writing down who was there and was not, (so don't be mad when our time comes, and Jack asks you "why you were not there"). Singing with Mel, telling those old Heni Youngman jokes, and starting a heaven little league, (his first pick would be Hank Greenburg, Jewish!!). and tag teaming with Dusty "the American Dream" at buffets with no guilt. If you never knew Jack, but only about him from family and friends there all true. So share a smile or joke with someone. That is the greatest gift you can give Jack. Jack your a real MENSCH).

Jack was a special friend of mine since we were both 13 years old. He sang to me on the phone for 54 years, even though it was the same song all these years! I will never forget the good times we had going to Meyers Pizza in the 60's and going bowling together. I am glad I was able to spend time with him a few months ago when he visited Las Vegas where I now reside. Our 50th high school reunion in August will not be the same without him. Jack, I'm glad I have all these memories of our friendship but you left us too soon. You will be missed by all who's live you've touched. Take care my friend.

Didn't know him but grew up in NMB and it was people like him that made it special. Celebrate that what he did with his life for he was someone special! ... Paul Gieger was my coach and personal family friend. I spoke with him and he already new what I was going to say about the passing of Jack. He said he was the best guy and lived on 9place while he lived on 9 ave. I told him what I first thought about when I read the article: "that NMB was filled with people like jack and paul that where so willing to coach and help" Paul said you're right and that's what made NMB the best place to grow up!

Very sad to hear this news. Jack made our family very welcome at the Thunderbird hotel Miami when we visited in January 2014... My children enjoyed his games round the pool, bingo and always had lovely stories to tell.
A great man, my deepest sympathies to his family.

Jack Ross was a man who put aside his troubles to make sure others were happy. I remember Jack rolling around in his wheelchair when he and I were partners in the Activities Program at the Imperial Club. He had just had TWO hip replacements, but that didn't stop him from making sure that the residents were satisified and happy. He put aside his pain to ease theirs. His smile, his personality, and of course, that voice will always be part of the memory of what Jack Ross was. Sing, smile, and we will all hear you and look to the sky to see your smile. Thank you for all you did for me and others! You will always be the KING!!! love always, Nadine Silverman

I am so sad to hear of Jack's passing. He was such a special person from my childhood days in North Miami Beach. His voice was legendary, but his love for the kids of NMB is what he should be remembered for. He made a special trip to the re-dedication of the DeLeonardis Youth Center last year and my family was so proud to have him there. My parents absolutely adored him. I am sure he was welcomed with open arms at the gates of heaven by all those from NMB who loved him. I bet he is singing to them right now - once again. Rest in peace Jack.

Jack was a rare and wonderful positive spirit among us -- everyday of his life. Whenever you saw him, he was full of energy, life, cheer -- and dedicated to showering some of that goodness on everyone in his daily path. So sorry for his passing way too young. Loving condolences to you, brother Alan, and the entire family. I'm fairly certain Jack is appearing twice daily/nightly at some heavenly venue, telling good old corny jokes and singing fun songs to amuse all of the other angels.
