Jacob Klassen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 29 to Oct. 8, 2010.
ERNIE KLASSEN Jacob Ernest Klassen, born December 18th, 1935 passed away September 28th, 2010. Ernie is survived by his wife, Iris E. Klassen (Kincaid); son, Robert ( Elaine) Klassen; grandchildren, Paulina and Matthew Klassen; also by three sisters, Nettie Proctor, Dolly Gordon and Tina Klassen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his beloved daughter, Colleen Klassen; parents, Katherina and Jacob Klassen; mother and father-in-law, Alena and Earl Kincaid; brothers, Leonard and Edward; sisters, Sherry, Mary-Jane and Helen. Ernie was born, raised and lived his entire life in the City of Saskatoon. Ernie was employed his entire life in one form or another in the transportation industry. Ernie started out working with his father, Jacob, in the drayage business, working with horses and wagons. In later years Ernie started and owned Superior Delivery Ltd in 1959. The company evolved into Superior Cartage Company Limited, a firm he owned up to February of 1986. At that time Ernie sold the business and entered the world of retirement. Finding that he had retired too young, Ernie helped his wife with a business that she had started, Superior Manpower Transportation Services Limited. Ernie was an active member of both the Saskatchewan Trucking Association and a charter member of the Saskatoon Traffic Club. The latter part of Ernie's life was spent caring for and looking after their daughter, Colleen Klassen. Colleen was stricken with MS and rather then have her cared for in a care home or facility, they chose to keep her with them as long as they could. Ernie continued to live in his home until this past February, when a series of medical events and conditions struck he, and his wife. After this, Ernie was never able to return to his home. He was moved from City Hospital's transitional care ward to his last address, that of Extendicare Nursing Home. That is where Ernie passed away. He did not pass on alone. He was with his son at the time of his passing. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the compassionate and caring staff at both City Hospital and St. Paul's hospital. With special thanks to the staff of the Transitional Care unit at City Hospital who went out of their way to look after and care for Ernie. They are truly angels of mercy. The same can be said for the kind staff at Extendicare and the way they helped and supported the family as Ernie's life was coming to a close. It will never be forgotten. The family would also like to extend, a special and grateful thanks to Ernie's nephews, Wayne Suderman and James Kincaid; sister-in-law, Marge Kincaid, and family friends and neighbours, Glenn and Roseanne Quale, Herman and Nora Wier, Agnes O'Neill, and Ron Hassal, who were and continue to be there for Ernie and the family. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you make a donation to either, World Vision, MS Society, Diabetes Foundation of Canada, Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of their choice. The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Royal Mennonite Church (610 Ave O North). Following the service friends and family are asked to gather together for a lunch at the church. Private Interment to follow. Arrangements in care of Kurtis Rae MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200).

Bob,

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, although I did not know Ernie that well I do remember like Doug mentioned ealier all the people he seemed to hire from City Park. Everytime his name came up in conversation it was always seem to end in the same way as how good of a man he was. It was nice to see you the other day and hope to see you again just to catch up.
Never forget the memories your dad has giving to you and your family and friends.

My heart goes out to Bobby and Mrs Klassen. Mr. K was a good friend. He gave me my first job. Heck he gave half of City Park their first job. He was a good man and will be missed.

Ernie will be greatly missed. Him and Iris have always been close to my heart, no matter long or how far apart we have been. If you wanted a mentor for how to be a loving, kind and happy soul, look no further than Iris and Ernie. I aim to someday be as great a human as them. I remember fondly the days in the Lincoln Continental(s) and at the different Superior Cartage warehouses. Always welcoming, and loving. A larger heart could not be found.
An angel went home.
Love you Ernie!!

I will always remember Ernie's kindness to me and my family when my Mother passed away. He and Iris moved my furniture, etc. from Brandon to Morinville for me. I will also remember the fun times we had at the hockey games in Saskatoon. Ernie had the greatest laugh and the biggest heart. My thoughts and prayers are with Iris, Bob and family. Love, Shirley and family

It is hard to say goodbye to such a kind and joyful soul. Uncle Ernie always made you laugh and feel welcome in his home. I spent many hours there playing with Colleen and Bobby and many by myself drinking Beep and listening to "Honeycomb" on the stereo. Uncle Ernie used to tease me about taking my little red sandals and called me Maggie Muggins my whole life. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Had many conversations with Ernie, usually after church in my younger days, along with my friend Joan. Moved away from Saskatoon after I got married so didn't see him many times after. Have good memories.

Ernie was family to Roger and I. We go back a few years and will always remember the good times we shared and the times we all needed a caring friend. Ernie's now with the family he loved and will be there waiting for all us with his familar grin and open arms.

That picture says it all! Uncle Ernie had the biggest smile and such a booming laugh. He had a huge heart and a lot of patience - the bunch of us cousins tested that regularly. He had the same sense of humor that grandpa, and Uncle Tony had; and that Aunt Iris and my dad still have. They were a force to be reckoned with when it came to teasing, joking and loving. We will miss him.

Ernie was a good friend, coffee partner, and boss. I enjoyed many a morning sitting having coffee with him. I will miss you Ernie.

Ernie had a funny and caring personality. I loved him as a brother. and will always remember the Pioneer hat that he gave his brother Ed to wear, that we stapled to the tandoms of the Semi.He always try to hide the biker look of his brother Ed. I would laugh so hard at some of his ways. However I respected him alot and cared for him and Iris. His favorite saying was "Wrong like that old country music song" I love you Ernie rest in peace.
