Jacqueline Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 10, 2023.
JACQUELINE ELIZABETH HENNOCK MARTIN was born on 1st July 1947 in Melbourne, Australia, the eldest child of Verna Mann Hennock and Wing Commander (later Air Vice-Marshall) Keith Hennock, Royal Australian Air Force.

Because of her father's Air Force career, she moved frequently during her childhood, living in Iwakuni Japan, Washington DC USA, Amberley Air Force Base Queensland, London and Canberra. In London she attended the prestigious Pittman College, and worked in Canberra and Sydney before spending seven years in the Malaga region of Spain.

She met Harold (Hal) Martin while living in Iran shortly before the Shah's overthrow, and they married in September 1977 in Virginia. She accompanied Hal on his many AT&T assignments. Their daughter Victoria was born in 1978, and they lived in Saudi Arabia, New Jersey, Spain, France, Korea, and Kent, England among many other stops around the world, and finally back to Mosman in Sydney, Australia. Upon moving to the US, Jackie joined United Airlines, working her way up to purser supervisor before her retirement. She also worked as an interior design specialist for Persnickity, an upmarket design store where she was the top salesperson. Her wonderful sense of style ensured that all the many houses she lived in were decorated to perfection. After her retirement from United, she moved to the Tampa area of Florida, and from there to live with her daughter's family in Cleveland, Ohio and then Costa Rica, where she was once again surrounded by warmth, beautiful tropical flowers and the Latin culture that she loved.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Victoria Ashley (Tori) Martin, her son-in-law Matthew Martin, her grandson Walker Lewis Jones and his partner Courtney Gast, her beloved sister Josephine Hennock, her brother John (Jay) Hennock and sister-in-law Karen Lange, nieces and nephews Sarah Carr, Jules Hennock, Leighton Carr, Alexander Hennock, Hudson Carr, Isabelle Graham, her god-children Lance Lewis, Ashley Braidwood, James Allen, and her life-long friends, Allison and Fred Lewis, Carmella Spencer, Glen Barnwell, Gilly Piper, Gail and Phil Kirchberg, and many of her United Airlines family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Verna and Keith Hennock, her grandmother Mavis Keep and her nephew Nick Hennock.

Somewhere we know Jackie is back to dancing on tables, smoking Gauloises Cigarettes and drinking Mojitos. She will live forever in our hearts.

Celebration of Life will be held in Northern Virginia in September and in Sydney, Australia in May. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Doctors Without Borders.

I was Jackie´s roommate in Tehran, Iran where she worked at the Australian Embassy from 1974-1976. Two blondes in Tehran ... we had SO MUCH fun! We stayed in touch over the years, speaking by phone the last time from Costa Rica. She was so happy and absolutely adored Tori and Walker. I miss my sweet friend but carry the joy of so many wonderful memories. Rest in peace Jackie.

Jackie was clearly effervescent! Although we never met, I´m confident her sparkle lives on in her beloved daughter, Victoria - one of my very favorite people. In fact, I KNOW it does. My heartfelt condolences, and best wishes, to all of the folks who knew, and loved, sparkling Jacqueline.

I was Jackie´s manager in Washington Dulles for several years when she supervised pursers. A memory ... I have family in Sydney and visit frequently. Each trip I would bring back ingredients to her for the wonderful Pavlova. I also told her of a wonderful shop I visited in Double Bay...shocked... she told me that was her sister!! The world has lost an amazingly wonderful individual and you have my very deepest and most sincere sympathy.

She lived a full life, for sure! I met her during her retirement years - so my travels with her included walks to Aldi's and swims at the pool. She might have slowed down in Costa Rica, but she was exactly where she wanted to be, with those she loved and who loved her. Wonderful way to go out - may we all be so blessed!
