Jacqueline Tuell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 31, 2014.
ORONO - Jacqueline R. Tuell, 84, died March 28, 2014, at her Orono residence, with family by her side. Jacque was born April 6, 1929, in Melrose, Mass., the eldest daughter of Dominic A. Travalini and Jeannette (Durpras) Travalini., who remained a powerful influence throughout her life.

She was joined by two loving sisters, Jeanne Travalini Rishell and Margaret Travalini Murphy in Everett, Mass., and eventually moved to Melrose, Mass., in 1940. Jacque graduated from Melrose High School in 1946 where she delivered her first of many public speeches, illustrating her capacity for holding an audience with her incredible oratory skills.

After working as an assistant to the Vice President of Commercial Filters in Melrose for 10 years, she met and married her husband, Sherwood J. Tuell, who passed away in 1993. Jacque left behind the familiarity of family and friends to forge a new life in Orono. She arrived knowing no one, but left a lasting impression on a community that allowed her to grow as a person. Throughout her life, Jacque participated in many local organizations, but her faith was foremost and ever present in her life. Jacque was an active member of the Catholic Church as a lecturer, but her greatest gift to the church was her musical talents. At one time in her life a person couldn't be married, buried, or celebrated without Jacque at the organ. She generously shared her gift of music and used this talent to bring joy to the community.

She believed her greatest contribution to Orono was her dedication to children's education as a school board member from 1978-1986, acting as board chair for several years. During this time, Jacque was at her best. She championed many causes, but children and families were always foremost in her heart.

Jacque was proud to have raised seven children, Michael, Peter, Phillip, Tony, Maria, Jeanna, and Annie, all of whom gave her great joy and a few gray hairs. This was a labor of love. Both Jacque and Sherwood sacrificed throughout their lives to provide a greater life for their children. They proudly watched as they went on to create happy and productive lives with their careers and families. Jacque celebrated the births and cherished each of her grandchildren, John, Rachael, Ben, Jillian, Gaby, Zeb, Jane, Elija, Hannah, and Luke. Recently her grandson, John and Lauren blessed her with her first great-grandchild, Annabel Ruth. She was blessed with great-daughters and sons-in law, Dana, Leslie, Kristy, Karl, and Daryl.

Jacque's life was a simple mission. She loved her neighbor and welcomed the stranger. Jacque was the matriarch of the Tuell Family and will be greatly missed by her children. Her lessons of love, laughter, and good stories will forever be present in their family's fabric and traditions.

The family would like to express gratitude to New Hope Hospice for their support. Jacque connected to the many caregivers over the past years. Special thanks to Roean, Kacey, and Joyce for their dedicated, loving care. Jean Sweetser was a rock to the Tuell family and a tireless supporter of Jacque's needs.

Jacque was a voracious reader and lifelong learner. She loved a good book, a cup of coffee, and great conversation. Because of Jacque strong commitment to education and children, contributions in her name can be made to the RSU34 Children's Fund, 56 Oak St., Old Town, ME 04468. Jacque could also be honored by doing a simple kind act for a neighbor, stranger, or friend.

Family and friends may call 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, at the Newman Center, College Avenue, Orono, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10a.m. Wednesday. Notes of condolences and to view a life story through pictures please visit www.birminghamfuneralhome.com.

I just today heard of your Mom's passing from a relative in Old Town...I have very fond memories of her...I lost both my Mom and Dad in the past couple of years and know your pain well...take comfort in each other and the knowledge that she was well loved by many. God bless.

Tuell Family,
I was so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was an Orono icon and loved by so many. You should all be proud of how well you took care of your mother toward the end of her life. Losing your Mom is tough no matter how "ready" you may think you may be. She's still with you and lives on through each of you. No doubt you all got a good bit of your humor from Jackie!

To all the Tuell family I am so sorry for the loss of your Mother. She was a wonderful person and I have many happy memories of her. She was a fun catechism teacher and always had cookies and milk waiting for our class after school. She will be missed by many but alive forever in out hearts and memories.

Jacque was positive energy in Orono and an inspiration through example. She was also a light in my adolescent life. May Jacque rest in peace and may her lovely family carry her light into the future. Her family is indeed blessed. Prayers and love to her family.

My last memory of Jacque is at St. Mary's church where she sang beautiful songs at my mother's funeral. I can hear her voice now. It comforted me then and it comforts me now. She was a great friend to my parents and to my brothers and I. I loved her laugh and how kind she was to us all. I was in awe of the great family she raised and how she still had energy for church and community activities. What an amazing woman. Thinking of all of you at this sad time.

We appreciate your having shared some of the trials of your Mother's illness with us and though we know this has to be a very difficult time for you, hopefully all the memories of better times will sustain you and Daryl and the rest of your family. To the Entire Tuell Family,
We could not have asked for a better neighborhood to grow up in than we had on Forest Avenue in Orono and "Mrs. Tuell" was a large part of why that was true. She was Mom for any of us visiting the house. To have neighbors that welcomed you in as part of their family that shared with everyone was truly special.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Tuell Clan,

It was ironic that Tony informed me about your moms passing before the puck was dropped as we faced each other in a hockey game this past Friday. I have fond memories of Oronos Godmother and her ability to offer fair but firm guidance. I recall carrying bags of bulkie rolls into her household where she awaited near the stove, cooking enormous batches of her spaghetti.

Her dedication to the schools and the town was never ending. She was a caring individual who meant so much to so many people.

I immediately thought of her singing in front of the organ, which she always owned, during every performance.

I recently lost my dad and know of the pain that occurs but recognize that it turns to wonderful memories to last your lifetime.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mike, Peter, Phil, Tony, Maria, Jeanna and Annie:

So sorry to hear of Jacque's passing. She was a force of nature, and like a mom to all of us who grew up with you in Orono. She could make you laugh like no one else, and she had such a great sense of living life fully. I know that you all were her greatest joys. I will always think of her singing at the Newman Center (with my mom competing for who could sing the loudest!) and I am sure she is singing now. You are in my thoughts.

To the entire Tuell family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your mom was a good friend and neighbor to my Mom and Dad, as well as to Judi, Joey, Amy and me. One never had to guess where you stood with her. The memories are flooding in and I can only say that she contributed greatly to the fabric of our community. She is with Chummy now, probably giving him directions on one thing or another. She will be missed by many people including the Cota's.

I have many wonderful memories of "Aunt Jackie".... not the least of which involves her distracting me with a funny story while my mother bandaged my scraped knee in the kitchen of the apartment on Forest Avenue, long ago. She brought laughter and "good sense" (as my father would put it) to any situation. Deepest sympathy to Michael and all the Tuell kids.

To Michael, Peter, Phillip, Tony, Maria, Jeanna, and Annie:

Your mother was one of THE most wonderful people on earth...I'm sure you know that as you were able to grow up in her home and breathe in the warmth and love that constantly came from wherever she was. She was truly 'bigger than life' and filled with so much love and warmth! She was literally a GREAT woman! I've never known anyone who knew the Gospels better and lived them more completely every single day of their lives! My life was changed forever for the better because of her! She was the only friend that anyone would have ever needed and if she was your friend, you knew that everything in life would be OK now because she was in it. I have managed to try and stop crying long enough to write these few words, but let me tell you---it hasn't been easy. The town of Orono is never going to be quite the same and you now have the obligation to spread the love and warmth that you received to all those whom you meet in your mother's name. If you can manage to do that---your lives will be as happy as hers and your communities will be changed completely by that spirit in which she lived her life. The laughter is what I remember most about your mom---oh how full it was...and mostly because of YOU! You gave her joy beyond measure (and a few white hairs)---but mostly joy and laughter. How she loved you all! I'm thinking now that the Lord is going to have her VERY busy in eternity...probably reconciling every possible group of people who have been at odds with each other and working non-stop at being His personal representative everywhere and with everyone. Think of the joy she will have now chatting with other 'greats' in Paradise! She will be sooooo busy now! There will be appointments with popes of presidents, kings and queens---but most of all, she will be trying to have long chats and visits with anyone who suffered need in this life. When she arrives in Heaven, I would NOT want to be Fr. Crosier or Fr. Cox! I'm sure she'll have a few choice words with them also.

May God love and bless you all and your families...and May the Lord place her at His side in Paradise!

With much love and my poor prayers,

Father Gregory (O'Keefe), who is praying for you!

Praying for you all at this time of loss. Your mom will be missed by all who knew her. I got to know Jacque best when I served as the Orono Schools Volunteer Program Coordinator- from 2000-2004. Your mom was a committed volunteer who I could always count on! She loved the kids and helping out the teachers. The students always looked forward to Mrs. Tuell coming in to read to them-she brought Harry Potter to life! And I am sure in the process led many kids into a lifelong love of reading! God bless you all. Prayers, Gretchen Casey
