James Allport Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2023.
James "Jim" Allport, was born in Union, MS on March 1, 1937, to Herbert and Annie (Herchenhahn) Allport. Jim moved to Anderson in 1953 with his family. As a young man, he served in the Air Force where he did tours in Japan and Texas. When he returned to Indiana, Jim worked for the Indiana Gas Company for 34 years. After retirement, Jim spent many years living in Las Vegas, NV before moving back to Anderson in 2019.

Jim met the love of his life, Betty, in 1964. Together they raised three daughters who adored him. He was a wonderful husband and the best father anyone could hope for. Jim was devoted to his family, and he cherished his grandchildren who are now left with many fond memories of spending time with their grandpa.

Those who knew Jim would say he selflessly, and without need for recognition, was always willing to lend a hand. And, oh boy, did he have hands. Everyone who shook his hand for the first time was in awe over the size of his hands. Most exclaimed, "He has the biggest hands I've ever seen!"

Jim has been living with the challenges of Alzheimer's for the last several years. More recently, he battled an illness that took a major physical toll on his body. Though we are heartbroken to lose him, we know that he is now resting comfortably and able to recall the memories that have been lost for the last several years.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Brother (Sydney), sister (Gettie Janet), daughter (Diane), and two grandsons (John and Marty Hogge).

He is survived by his wife, Betty, two daughters Donna (Cox) and Cathy (Hutchens) of Anderson. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren who will miss him more than words can express: Adam Fetty of Westminster, CO, Mitchell Hogge of Fishers, Miranda Hutchens of San Antonio, TX , and Jared and Bryce Hutchens and Steven and Austin Fetty of Anderson. He is also survived by several great grandchildren that he adored.

Jim made the decision to donate his whole body to science. There will not be a service at this time.

Jim was one of the greatest man I ever had the privilege to know. He always was wonderful to me and treated me as If I was his own son. I'm so sad to hear of his passing and he will be greatly missed.
