James Tolby Anderson BIRCHLEAF, Va. James Tolby Anderson, age 85, of Crooked Branch, passed away Friday, April 16, 2010, at Norton Community Hospital in Norton, Va., from a prolonged illness. Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Kilby and Carrie Viers Anderson. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a retired miner, a UMWA member of Local 7170, and a member and deacon of Sandy Basin Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two baby sisters, Audrey and Antha; two baby brothers, Marvin and Daniel; two sons, Trooper Noah Gerald Anderson and James "Jim" Anderson; and a daughter, Patricia "Patty" Anderson; also a host of wonderful friends, aunts, uncles, cousins and several brothers and sister-in-law, whom he thought of like his own. Survivors include his loving, beautiful wife of 63 years, Antha Faye Owens Anderson, who was his one true love and his best friend; two daughters, Kathy Smith of the home and Sandy (Bobby) Brown of Clintwood, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; plus a host of friends, sisters and brothers in the Lord who loved him greatly. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 19, 2010, at the Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Danny Smith, Joe Edwards and Darrell Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson Cemetery, Birchleaf, Va., VFW Post 8979, DAV Chapter 35, and American Legion Post 227 of Dickenson County will conduct military graveside rites. Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a service at 7 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to: www.haysifuneral.com Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

My symphaty to Tolby's family. He will be missed by a host of relatives, friends and his church family. He was one of my second cousins. My father was the late Carl Anderson, Clinchco, Va.
