He was an active member of Latta United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class. He participated in the Latta Rotary Club, Latta Jaycees and Latta Volunteer Fire Department. He was an IPTAY and Clemson University Letterman's Club member for more than 50 years, and a past member of the SC Athletic Coach's Association.
Born in Hemingway, he was the son of the late Emerson Lancoe Ard and Louise Fore Ard. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Geraldine Berry Ard; his brother, Emerson Lancoe Ard Jr. of Hemingway; and his sister, Christine Ard of Columbia.
Survivors include his daughter, Bonnie A. Ellis (Fred) of Latta; sons, James W. Ard Jr. (Denise) of Florence, Terrence E. Ard (Jackie) of Rock Hill and Burke B. Ard (Chris) of Graham, N.C.; brother, Jerry F. Ard of Garden City; sisters-in-law, Rachel B. Williams of Charlotte, N.C., and Susan B. Beall of Columbia; and six grandchildren, Josh, Erin, Stephen, Cameron, Cecilia and Matthew.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Cooper Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10 in Latta United Methodist Church with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Services are to be conducted by the Rev. Danny Bragdon and the Rev. Bill Williams.
Pallbearers will be Emerson Lancoe Ard, Jerry Fore Ard, Jr., Michael Berry Beall, Allen Willis "Hal" Berry, James Burke Berry III, Thomas LeGrande Berry, Robert Exum Williams Jr. and James Fleet Williams.
Memorials may be made to Latta United Methodist Church or the Geraldine B. Ard Memorial Scholarship Fund.
