James Arnold Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2024.
James A. Arnold, 75 of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away at his home after a long battle with cancer on June 8, 2024. He was born in The Pas Manitoba, Canada, the son of the late William (Bill) Arnold and Muree Richards Arnold. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Amy Babbs Arnold.

Jim was a graduate of Brandon University with a BEd. He left Canada and the cold weather and moved to Antigua and taught high school. While there he was also a bartender at a beach bar. He made many friends and skippered a sailboat in many boat races. Jim loved living by the sea. After Amy and Jim married she longed to go back to the states so they moved to Durham NC where he taught fifth grade at Club Blvd School. All the kids wanted to be in Mr. Arnold's class. In 1997, he decided to manufacture BBQ sauce. It was his mom's recipe. He named it Jim's Own. It was very successful and was sold in NC, SC and Georgia and still on store shelves today. Jim cooked, bottled and delivered his sauce himself weekly to all his vendors. Jim was an avid Duke fan, he loved his puppies, loved to travel, especially on cruises and loved to play cards and gamble. He loved to entertain friends and have daiquiri parties. Jim loved to cruise around in his mustang GT but especially loved riding his Harley Davidson with his NC friends from Brailie's. He also enjoyed a good rum and diet coke, NFL!! He lived life to the fullest.

Jim is survived by his love and caregiver Mallorie Warren, daughters Kristin Arnold (Shane Ducharme), Jodie Brooking (Chris); grandchildren Jordan Arnold, Amanda Arnold, Richard Brooking, Jessica Brooking; great grandchildren Lucy, Dahlia, Tony, Mason and Calliope; and sister Jan Bell (Don).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any animal rescue of one's choice or the American Cancer Society.

A celebration of life will be determined at a later time.

I first met Jim when he was still living in the Brandon, MB Canada area in the mid-1970's. I was just a boy and we met through showing Arabian horses; he and Diane had horses as did my family. Jim and his family were regular visitors to my parent's place and I vividly recall him always smiling and laughing! As life happens, those days were soon behind us and people went their separate ways; for decades! Then in 2017, I had the fortune to renew my acquaintance with Jim as he toured northern Manitoba in his Mustang! The last memory of I have of him is sitting on the deck of my cabin at Clearwater Lake, enjoying rum - English Harbour - and Pepsi. I only had Coke at the cabin, but Jim had a supply in the trunk of the Mustang, along with bottles of his bbq sauce! He was kind enough to leave me several! Our time was spent catching up on 40+ years of life, and, as I remember, lots of laughs and smiles! Jim was truly a man to remember! My deepest condolences to his family. His was a life well lived!!

I had the pleasure of being educated by Mr.Arnold at Club Blvd. He was one of my favorites. Later in life I got to enjoy his delicious sauce. We ran into each other as he was dropping some off at Kings Red and White. He remembered me instantly and that meant a lot!!! I´m thankful to have know him, I pray for comfort to his family. He will surely be missed and remembered by many!!

I encouraged Jim to drive his Mustang to Virginia International Raceway and drive it on track in a group event we were having. Then I took him out with me in the Corvette and led another group. He was smiling and when he left, he said he had done one more thing on his bucket list. He was one of my favorite people. I was so happy when he found you, Mallorie, and I hope to meet you sometime. I am sending you hugs an prayers....Anne Keller

We met Jim when our son attended Club Boulevard Elementary. Jim was a great teacher and our son never forgot Jim's class. He became friends with Jim when he became an adult. Jim introduced us to his homemade BBQ sauce at a neighborhood cookout with the families of several of his students. At that time I seem to remember he called it "Jolly Mon" sauce. We started buying the sauce from him in Mason jars he bottled at home. Through the years we kept in touch and watched Jim build a business with "Jim's Own." Jim was always smiling and positive and grabbed life by the neck and got the most out of it. He had his share of sorrows but rose above them and dwelt on the good things in life. It is a blessing to have known Jim and count him among our friends. We will remember him fondly every time we make ribs or BBQ chicken. When the Saints gather at the river, they surely will be eating good!

Mallorie, I am so sorry for your loss. I´ve known Jim since I moved to North Carolina in1987. Jim never met a stranger and was always a joy to be around. My former wife and I made a trip to Antigua with Jim and Amy in 1990. We had a blast. He made drinks at his old bar at Runaway Beach. He was always there when I needed a lift. He will be surely missed.

Dan Birch.
