James Barbes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2025.
James Barbes, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and Navy veteran, passed away on June 14, 2025, in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. He resided in Clinton, Connecticut. He was born on June 25, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan.

James proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS WASP during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His service during this pivotal moment in history reflected his deep sense of duty and commitment to his nation. After he served his country, he made his living as an account executive in the corrugated packaging industry, retiring from Johnson Corrugated after many years.

Family was at the heart of James's life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Denise Mizenko Barbes as well as his 2 cats Slick and Buttercup that he cherished; his sons, Jamie Barbes and Jody Barbes (Violetta) and his grandchildren, Angelika VandenBerg and Jennifer Barbes. James also leaves behind his sister-in-law Margaret Wendt and her husband Greg; nephew Patrick Wendt (Michele), great nephew Braxton Wendt and nephew Matthew Wendt and partner Natalie; brother Bruce Borawski; niece Michelle Ring (Jerry); nephew Mark Barbes; as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Borawski, father Paul Barbes, stepfather Anthony Borawski, and brother John Barbes.

Jimmie held dear the time spent with his wife and her family-especially their cherished yearly vacations at their timeshare in Aruba. These trips were a source of joy and lasting memories for those closest to him. Jimmie also enjoyed time with Denise and her family during their annual New Year's Day tradition of going to the beach, then out to dinner that he has done for many years. He especially loved his great nephew Braxton that he, to everyone's dismay, taught how to scream. He loved game night with his friends and he always found a friend or 20 at June's Outback Pub!

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved him. There are no funeral arrangements at this time per Jimmie's request.

Denise, I had heard about Jimmie for years thru David and then Michele. David always spoke highly of him and of all the fun times they had had together. They had lost touch with each other for some time, then as life would have it, Jimmie married you and then because of our friendship, they were right back in the 70's again. I'm so glad you two found each other because you've both enjoyed that part of your lives so much. It's so hard to loose the ones we love. Even though they are gone from our sight, they never really leave us. Like with Michele, Jimmie too will always be with you. Keep him close in your heart and remember all the good times you've had with him. I'm so glad I finally got to meet him. God Bless you Jimmie and Rest in Peace. You earned it. Our deepest sympathy to you and Jimmie's family. May he always keep that smile on his face.
All our love,
Kathy and David Sanderson
