James Botts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 27, 2018.
Our hearts are broken, but the heavenly host is rejoicing mightily that Jimmy Botts has joined the party. Our dear husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and extraordinarily special friend peacefully departed this earth in the early morning of Saturday, January 27th, surrounded by a room of witnesses and love. No one who ever crossed paths with his delightful soul will ever be the same.

In the words of Jimmy, life was "just peachy" and made especially blessed by his parents who passed before him, James Burnett Botts, Sr. and Janice Malone Botts. Jimmy was also preceded in death by his sister, Joan Marie Botts, who taught him one of his proudest talents: how to dance, a.k.a. "get on the good foot." He was a proud native Mobilian who loved sharing stories of his childhood on St. Theresa Court. In the 10th grade, on a blind date, Jimmy met the love of his life, Laura Ann Lee. Their almost 50 year love story is the stuff of legends that produced two fine daughters, Meredith Botts Jordan (Josh) and Amanda Marie Botts. One of his greatest joys was becoming a grandfather in 2011 to Joshua "Miles" Jordan, his "first mate" with whom he loved to share the "salt water life." Their favorite times together included countless days fishing for speckled trout (never as big as the stories they told), boating to Little Lagoon Pass, cannonball contests off of the wharf of "Pappy's Pool," pillow fights and Alabama vs. Ole Miss football watching. His sister, Janice Botts Lindsey (Gene), and brother Judson Malone Botts, were a source of amazing strength and laughs for him until the very end. The stories and memories recalled of their unique and adventurous childhood could fill a novel. Their sibling love for each other was true and a testament to all who witnessed their special bond. That bond was also passed down to his own daughters as well as a slew of nieces and nephews: Brandi Lindsey, Brian Lindsey (Michelle), Jonathan Lindsey, Palmer Botts, Parker Botts, Jane-Marie Botts, Elizabeth LaRene', Dylan Lindsey, Colton Lindsey, Jay Lindsey and Jackson Lindsey who will continue the tradition of countless shared memories together with card games, dancing, good music, corn hole tournaments, Fourth of July Summer Lagoon Olympics, Mardi Gras parades and visits to the Dew Drop Inn. Jimmy had countless "families" outside of those related by blood: his Springhill Medical Center co-workers, especially those with whom he shared a career dedicated to Respiratory Therapy; his Mystics of Time float barn buddies, his Rogue Reunion crew and his St. Luke's Church family.

In Jimmy's final days, his loved ones smiled when imagining the happy reunions he would have in heaven with so many friends that passed before him.

Those friends and family members left on earth are welcome to join us for visitation at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 12-1:00 PM, with a memorial service to follow. Jimmy's "Celebration of Life" party (planned by him) will be held at The Bluegill Restaurant at 6:00 PM on Wednesday. Please come with stories, laughs, comfortable clothes and dancing shoes. Jimmy will have a cold drink waiting on you. He insists.

"Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, 'Woo hoo! What a ride!'

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in his memory to:

Jimmy even though it we did not cross paths that often in later years, when we did see each other it would seem as though it was a regular event like the old days.
You will be missed my friend.

Laura, I am so devastated to hear of Jimmy's passing. He was the first person to reach out a hand in friendship when I arrived at Springhill. I was honored to be invited into his inner circle of friends. I can't help but smile when I think of the many zany adventures I had with he and Kenny. He had the heart of a lion and an angel combined. I never met anyone else that combined grace, humor, and a southern charm like he did. Jimmy was larger than life and was loved by everyone that ever met him. I am so sorry for you and his girls. I am also sorry I am so far away and did not get to tell my friend goodbye. If I can do anything to help out, please let me know. I will never forget him.

Laura, Meredith and Amanda,
Never in my mind when I read the note on Facebook did I realize it was in reference to Jimmy. I apologize if my reference was due to my misunderstanding that it was not his father. It was not until today reading the obituary that I knew it was the loss of Jimmy. Living out of town has kept us out of touch with people. Keith would have been there if only we realized it was Jimmy. Keith and I both had wonderful years working with him at Springhill. We think a lot of all of you. Our deepest condolences to each of you. We are sending our prayers for comfort and understanding during this time of grief. We are grieving too. He was such a lively and bigger than life personality. He kept us laughing often.

Our hearts are truly broken after losing our Dear Friend,Jimmy, from this world. He was an awesome man and I am so blessed to have him and his family in our lives. Our girls grew up at St. Luke's together (Sunday School, Youth, Group, Girl Scouts) plus we later celebrated their weddings and the births of their children. My fondest older memories of Jimmy were during the Men's Club great canoe trips and the most recent ones were of him enjoying our Adult Easter Hunt on the Bay with a bushwacker. Laura, Meredith, and Amanda may you find comfort and peace through your faith, his memories and the love of friends and family. With Deepest Sympathy and Love, Judy

Jimmy was the essence of Mobile, I've been away for a long time but culture that stays with you forever. Go way back to Woodcock days and even though we navigated off in different directions, every time I saw him, including this past summer, was an instant reconnect. What a great guy, sad to see him go but sail on JB, see you on the other side. Prayers and peace be with you Laura, Meredith, Amanda and all the family.

So many memories.... Jimmy has been a part of my family life for the 50 years that he and my sister, Laura, have been together. Countless stories, laughs, and memories. Life has changed forever. I trust he has reunited with family and dear friends that have gone before and that we will have a wonderful reunion in the future. God be with his wonderful mate and their girls as they adjust to their new reality and find solace with the special, loving, and plentiful memories.
