Published by Houston Chronicle on Sep. 16, 2021.
James William Casey
1941-2021
Mr. James William Casey Sr., born in the Bronx, New York, August 7, 1941 to William and Mary Casey, and died in Houston, Texas on August 27, 2021 at the age of 80. He was the second of four children. He is survived by his wife Barbara Casey of 51 years; his son James W. Casey Jr. and his wife Rebecca Casey, and grandchildren Jack Casey and Ben Casey, of Cypress, Texas; daughter Andrea J. Armstrong and her husband Sean Armstrong, and grandchildren Nick Armstrong, Keira Armstrong, and William Armstrong of Anchorage, Alaska. He is survived by his sister Mary Hiel of Paramus, New Jersey, brother William Casey and sister in law Irene Casey of Quogue, N.Y., brother John Casey and sister in law Alba Casey of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Holy Cross High School, in Flushing, New York, Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, where he received a B.S. in business, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, in Kings Point, New York where he received a master's degree in Statistics.
In his youth, he played tuba, accordion and piano in his high school band. He worked on restoring an old pipe organ in Port Washington, NY, from an old movie theater and donated it to a church. Later he played the organ at churches St. John Vianney in Houston, and St. John Neumann in Austin, Texas for many years. In his later years, he played piano with a singer and bass player, as part of a jazz trio at nursing homes, restaurants and other events in Austin. He spent hours playing his baby grand piano at home which he and his family enjoyed.
He worked as V.P. of finance at Luckenbach Steamship in New York, NY from 1971-1976. He then moved to London then Houston as V.P. of finance at Pool Co., of Houston, Texas. He was later made President. He later worked at Art Carved, of Austin, Texas, and as a business consultant, until he bought his own company, MPA systems, Inc. of Sanger, Texas, which he felt was the most fulfilling position, of his long and distinguished career. He was a businessman, a musician, and a golfer, but his family was always the most important thing to him.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Holy Cross High School in Flushing, New York, or Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. There will be a funeral Mass for him at St. John Vianney at 925 Nottingham Oaks Trail in Houston, Texas on September 24, at 10:30 a.m. with a reception following.

Barbara, I am so sorry. I remember the fun times Jimmy and Andrea had playing with Jennifer, Laura and Janet when we lived on Winter Oaks and y´all were across the street. I also remember how kind and faithful you were to Cornellia when she was fading. I don´t have your address or I would have sent a note instead.
Warmest regards,
Meredith

Jimmy, my older brother, my mentor, my sometimes protector but also the captain when seas were rough and the family standard setter. A great family man with a fine-tuned business sense, a knack to pick and play the right song at the right time and the ability to sink that 30-foot putt if needed (Sorry, I´m probably lying about his putting). I will miss you. We all will miss you. You will always be with us. I just want to share some memories.
In 1961 Jimmy was attending Iona College and I was in High School applying to colleges. I had envelopes addressed to mail to four "Colledges" and one University. Jimmy looked at the envelopes and shook his head... but he let me mail them. The next day he sat me down and told me I am not going to get into any of the "Colledges" I applied to. He was right. I got four rejections. Jimmy then explained that I am on a path like Elvis Presley who did not go to college and was drafted. "Do you want to be drafted into the Army or be a student?" was his very well taken question. Fortunately, I was able to spell University, so I did get one acceptance and did fine. However, I did have to join the Navy when I graduated from the University in 1965 but Jimmy always considered this a far better option than the Army. He was, as usual, right.
All the Casey children, Maureen, Jimmy, myself and Jack, were very fortunate. We had great parents, great family relatives to support us, good neighbors and a wonderful upbringing by the WWII veteran greatest generation. It was not just us, all our childhood friends and contemporaries had moral compasses that were set in the 1950´ 1960´s environment. Choose a path, follow it, work at it, do not give up, be fair and accepting and most of all, do not judge anyone before you know them and always remember where you came from. Also, and most important, have fun. Jimmy maintained these traits throughout his life. He had a full and rich life. He was a religious man. He was fair, honest and understanding yet tough when he had to be.
We had some great golf rounds together that he always won. But today I think why we didn´t play more rounds when we could. They say that everyday life sometimes gets in the way of living life so I will just say that I wish I had gone on those Alabama Robert Trent Jones golf trips that he asked me to join. My bad!
To my sister-in-law Barbara, thank you for all you did for Jim. For loving him, nurturing him, caring for him and, yes, at times (I am sure) tolerating him. You made his life full and rich and you created a wonderful family together. You are the best and I love you.
Jim´s piano playing will always be the background music of our lives. He will continue to pick the music and say, "Remember this one?" That will not change. The music will be a bit softer now, but we will all still hear it. And if we really miss Jim´s music, we can always listen to Tuba Skinny on U-Tube
Jim, we will still tell your jokes that all have the same "Hum a few bars and I´ll fake it" punch line. Nothing will change and the musicians will get the joke right away. But we all really do think the jokes are funny.
Your Brother Billy
