James Leroy Cleveland, 79, residing in Sandusky, passed away late Thursday evening, Aug. 25, 2022 at Ohio Veteran's Home following a brief illness.
James was born July 29, 1943, in Bristol, Connecticut, to the late James Warren and Katherine Mary (Rosenbeck) Cleveland.
James graduated from Oliver Wolocott Technical High School in 1962 in Torrington, Connecticut. James was a veteran of U.S. Army who proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, serving with First Calvary Airmobile, stationed at An Khe. He participated in many search and destroy missions, including Operation Masher, White Wing, Paul Revere, and Operations Irving. Prior to going to Vietnam, he was trained to be a guard at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He retired from General Motors following over 45 years of service. James was a member of Eagles, American Legion Post 83, and VFW Post 2529. In his spare time, he enjoyed his 1964 Corvette, his 1968 Corvette named "The Froggy," his Harley-Davidson, playing softball, horseshoes, and he was always up for a good time.
James is survived by his two sons, James W. (Jaymie) Cleveland II of Monroeville and Geoffrey A. Cleveland of Milan; five grandchildren; sister, Darlene Samele of Torrington, Connecticut; brother, Jerry Cleveland of Harwinton, Connecticut; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his former wife, Marilyn R. Cleveland; and brother-in-law, Carmen Samele.
A celebration of life will be 1-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, at Meadow Green Memorial Park Gazebo, 2606 Bogart Rd., Huron. Full military honors will be conducted at 3 p.m. by U.S. Army, American Legion Post 83, and VFW Post 2529. Burial will take place at a later date at Harwinton West Cemetery, Harwinton, Connecticut. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting family with arrangements.

Searching for the right words and there just aren´t any. We shared a lot of fun times over the past 30 yrs or so. There was work, the Eagles, the Legion, not to mention summer picnics and bowling. We shared it all and now we hold onto the memories. Rest In Peace dear friend, we will miss you.

Please accept my sincere sympathy in the passing of Jim. He was a kind, sweet, warm-hearted person with whom I had many conversations. As a volunteer at the OVH, I made sure Jim went to play Bingo and got fresh air when the weather was good. Sometimes just sitting in his room watching old cowboy movies was all he wanted to do. I will miss visiting with Jim, as I am sure you, his family, will miss him. He is now in heaven charming everyone with his shy smile. God Bless Jim Cleveland.
