I especially remember Jim, or "James," as my mother enjoyed calling him, as understated in everything he did. He spoke softly and thoughtfully. Although an a skier and an expert bowler (and, perhaps, an athlete in other sports) he did not trumpet his athleticism. Again, he could be counted upon to provide timely updates from the news or to recall details others had forgotten, but he was self-effacing about his extensive knowledge base. While courting Felicia, Jim was obviously and always forbearing (as well as somewhat less apparently strategic) with Felicia's younger twin sisters, accompanying us to church and giving us driving lessons, for example. Through thick and thin, Jim's patience helped him to ride out life's challenges. As a landscaper, Jim very likely will appreciate any tree planted in his honor.

To the family of James F. Connolly Jr. my deepest sympathies for your loss. May the fond memories of your loved one help you to endure during this difficult time. Please know that God sees your pain and wants to comfort you. Pray to Him for strength and you will receive the peace that only He can provide.

I shall miss the ever cheerful, carefully enunciated greeting which Jim recorded for his voicemail account. I shall also miss his understated manner, his courtesy, his curiosity about people and events, and his unerring ability (when asked) to set the conventionally accepted "record" straight with pertinent details and specific facts. Finally, I shall miss the wonderful smile which lit his lean face when, trim and tall, young and so erect, he ferried Felicia and her twin sisters (one of whom was I) to Sunday Masses in an original exercise of courtship.
