James Coyle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2024.
Mr. James A. Coyle

Mr. James A. Coyle, 83, of The Villages, Florida, and Waterloo, Iowa passed away peacefully at the Villages Hospital of heart failure on March 3, 2024. His family was by his side. He was born on March 9, 1940, in Straffordville, Ontario, Canada, the son of Lyle and Bonnie Coyle. He was the husband and best friend of his wife Nedra, together for 57 years.

Jim, as he was known to many, had a passion for sports from a young age. He excelled as a baseball and hockey player, eventually becoming a goaltender for the University of Michigan Wolverines. His love for hockey continued as he played for the Waterloo Black Hawks, where the team achieved five consecutive championships. He said these were some of the best years of his life...The friendships formed in those years continue today.

He also coached youth hockey teams in Waterloo and Sioux City impacting the lives of many young athletes. He was so proud of these boys and their accomplishments.

Jim began his career at Iowa Public Service/MidAmerican Energy in Waterloo and transferred to Sioux City in 1984 where he retired as a VP after 30 years of service.
After he retired from the company, he served as a temporary city manager at the Dakota Dunes Development in South Dakota for a short time.

In 1999, Jim and Nedra added a home in The Villages where they formed lasting friendships. Being an avid golfer, Jim continued spending many happy hours on the course.

Jim will be deeply missed by his wife, Nedra; his son Todd of Overland Park, Ks; his daughter Vicki, and husband Gregg Piehl of Waverly, Ia.; his grandchildren Brittany(Adam)Miller, Brooke (Nick) Layton and Andrew(Haylee)Piehl; his great-grandsons, Maxell, Clifford, Forrest, Mason and Beckett; his sister Mary Ann and her husband Gary Morton of Temple Texas, as well as many other cherished family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Wayne Coyle of Canada.

Jim's sharp wit will be missed. Underneath that gruff exterior was a soft heart who loved the time spent with family and friends. His life was a good one, not perfect, but a life well lived, whether at the rink, on a golf course, or a cruise ship with Nedra.

An open house to celebrate his life will be held on March 23rd from 12:30 to 2:30 at Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course (Party Room), Waterloo.

Contributions may be made to Waterloo Youth Hockey or a charity of your choice in Jim's memory.

Mr. James A Coyle will be remembered fondly for his love of sports, dedication to his community, and the lasting impact he had on those around him. May he rest in peace.

I was honored to be a neighbor of Jim and Nedra's at Pine Valley Condos.
You'll never find a more generous, welcoming couple then the Coyles!
Our HOA meetings were always held at the Coyles per their own hospitable Invitation. It's also where I really got to know Jim. As we would gather around Nedra's table Jim always had his ear on the meeting even though he sat in the living room! It never stopped Jim from being an active participant which we all enjoyed & depended on! He will be greatly missed.
To Nedra and the Coyle family please accept my heartfelt sympathy at this tremendous loss in your life of a husband & best friend, father, and grandfather. We, your friends, hold you all in highest esteem.
Sincerely,
Your Friend and neighbor,
Lani Gehlsen

My condolences to Jim´s family. He was a friend and fellow employee. Well liked by all around him. Shirley and I enjoy living in the community that Jim managed in its early years of development. Home to a relatively few early on, it has grown to over 4,000 and is a beautiful location. We are blessed to have had Jim in our lives.
