James CRONE Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 3, 2013.
CRONE, James Patterson "Jim," 92, of Richmond, Virginia, husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, departed this Earth to enter the loving arms of his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 1, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia; his brother, Glenn Crone (Sybel); and his four children, Colleen Moore, James Crone II "Buzz," Cathleen Crone and Carolyn Crone. He proudly is the grandfather of Angela Sykes (Stephen), Nathan Moore and Carson Moore and the great-grandfather of Carter Sykes and Charlotte Sykes. Born on January 24, 1920 in upstate New York, he grew up traveling with his father and mother, James Murray Crone and Inez Antoinette Patterson Crone, learning about engineering, building and designing and worked within the realm of fine and visual arts. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as Orderly for General Jacob L. Devers, being selected for his excellent marksmanship. He was appointed leader of Musical Events for the Armed Forces. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, he began to pursue a career in the Musical Arts. Endeavoring into Music Studies, he graduated from Westminster Choir College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major in Music. He was employed in Richmond, Virginia as Music Director at Northminster Baptist Church. As Richmond Rotarian he realized a perfect attendance record of 44 years. As founding member of Virginia Train Collectors and Antique Toy Collectors of America, he attained many beloved friends and managed great fellowship through love, common interest, appreciation and passion for aged and seasoned treasures. In 1957 he became the 236th member of Train Collectors Association which currently is in excess of 60,000 members nationwide. Working during the 1960's as sales representative for Schulmerich Carillons, he became interested in Handbells as Musical instruments and formed Malmark, Inc. with developer and designer Jake Malta. Before they had the product manufactured, he successfully contracted five clients for Handbell Sets. A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2013 at Lakeside United Methodist Church, 2333 Hilliard Road, Richmond, Va. 23228, (804)266.7016 and will be presided by the Reverend Laura Dervishian Inscoe, Rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in James Patterson Crone's name to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue Richmond, Va. 23228. Burial will be private.

To All of the Crone Family:

I am so sorry to learn of Jim's passing. My heart goes out to all of you. He was such a special man and so loved by you all. You were fortunate to have such a wonderful father; humble, passionate and handsome! I don't know how he passed but I'm sure you all surrounded him and he felt your love.

I lost my step-father, Jerry Tuft, not long ago, he made it to just past 80.

To Cathleen and Jim: Thank you for helping me through my time of grief when my father died way back when. You were both there for me and I still think of you and am thankful for your selfless support.
Love to Patty and all of you.

Sincerely, Nancy Blair

I am saddened to hear of Jim's passing. He was a gentleman through and through. When I think of the early days at Malmark Jim was always the kind and gracious representative from the South. A true dapper dresser Jim's white suits always added to the grandeur and style of his exhibit. A talented and 'love-of-life' individual. Jim will be missed! Lovingly, Susan Berry

My heart felt compassions to the family for your loss. I am the Son of Jack Patterson 1930 to 2007 and the Grandson of Howard Patterson 1908 to 1989. The photo of Jim on this memorial page looks remarkably like my father. I feel fortunate to have found this memorial honoring the life of a loved family member.

Dear ones, I only knew Mr. Crone from my visits to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens where I would see him and the beautiful Mrs Crone. I considered myself "lucky" if I would catch them both at the front desk. They filled me with love and joy...as beautiful as any flower in the garden. I am so very grateful to have shared the few brief moments I did. I express my deepest condolences to the family. Most sincerely. Jene and Claude Shipman

Mrs. Crone, Colleen, Buzz, Cathleen & Carolyn: you will each be in my family's prayers, and you all have my deepest sympathy in your loss. Mr. Crone was a gentleman in the best sense of the word. He and Mrs. Crone were beloved, steadfast friends to my parents for many decades. When I was a child, he was my favorite among the adults who would come to visit my parents. I do not recall ever seeing him without a jacket and tie; indeed, the only accessory we wore more often was his ever-present smile. He was young at heart, and his “removable thumb” trick, and coin from the ear trick, kept me baffled for years…, until he agreed to violate the “magician's oath” and shared with me the secrets so I could practice the tricks on others. He was a fine, kind man, and my family is thankful to have known him for so many years. We all share your grief in his passing.

My deepest sympathy goes to the family. I'm very sorry for your loss. Jim was a great person and fun to talk to. He will be greatly missed at the Antique Village where he would stop by and chat and share stories of collecting trains and old toys. It will not be the same there with out him.

Our sympathy to one of the best looking families of northside from the homliest brood of Irish mutts this side 'o the misty bog of County Waterford...the Simms-O'Brien clan. Our fervent prayer is that James is tramping the "streets of glory" a half hour before the devil knows he's passed.
