James Dougherty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2019.
On April 13, 2019, Col. James E. Dougherty, U.S. Army (Ret.), (Jim) passed away after a brief illness surrounded by his loving wife, Betty, and his children.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Betty, and his children; James Jr. (predeceased), Joy, Mark, Leigh, Brian and his wife, Arleen; grandchildren Morgan, Katherine, Megan, and Jeffrey; and his beloved dog, Shadow.

Born on June 15, 1934 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Jim was the loving son of William and Margaret Dougherty (both predeceased), and brother to Joseph and his wife Betty (both predeceased) and family; sisters, Mary Ann Kraus and her husband William (predeceased) and family, and Marjorie Joy and her husband Robert and family.

Jim was a 1957 graduate of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He received his Masters Degree in 1975 from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington.

The "Colonel", as many so fondly called him, had a distinguished career as a US Veteran of the Army, representing the country he so dearly loved. He served with distinction throughout his 30 years of military service and received numerous awards and honors. Jim attended The Artillery School, The Quartermaster School, The Intelligence School, Command and General Staff College and the National War College. During Jim's career he assumed several commands including Commanding Officer, 9th Supply and Transport Battalion (Ft. Lewis, WA); Commander, Sharpe Army Depot (Lathrop, CA) and Commander, Defense Subsistence Region Europe (Zweibruecken, Germany).

Jim was a 25+ year resident of Lago Vista, TX where he and Betty built their dream home on Lake Travis. As a distinguished member of the Lion's Club, and dedicated service in the Melvin Jones foundation he served his community and those in need. He was also a long-time member of the MGA Golf community in Lago Vista. In Jim's earlier days he served the community through the Disaster Awareness/Flood Prevention committee, Emergency Management Coordinator, Planning and Zoning Committee, Master Plan Review Committee, and other community activities. He was an active member of St. Mary Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church where his ashes will be interned.

A service with military honors for Jim and his wonderful life will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 6100 Lohman Ford Rd, Lago Vista, TX 78645, on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 11 a.m. with a light reception following in the reception hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to: Alzheimer's Association (https://alz.org).

I send my deepest condolences to the Dougherty family. My late husband, David Beckman, was a close and longtime friend of Jim's. We had the pleasure of visiting with Jim and Betty 10 years ago. My dear David died in 2010 and Jim flew from their summer hideaway in Washington state to attend David's Funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. Jim was a dear friend and mentor to David during their military careers. I send my heartfelt sympathy to your family.

My family and I feel so lucky to have had such a fun and wonderful Papa in our lives. It's been a great run with Jim and Betty. We made many, many wonderful memories. Katherine and Jeff miss their Papa dearly and I miss my very good friend.

Aunt Betty, cousins Mark, Joy, Leigh and Brian, I will be thinking about you all Saturday. I loved Uncle Jim and all of you even though we have seen each other just a few times in our lifetime. Wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time of loss. Prayers for you all. Love Kathy Dougherty Sears
