James Dunn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 14 to Sep. 16, 2009.
James Harold Dunn, of Niagara Falls, died on Sunday, September 13, 2009, in Schoellkopf Health Care Center, following a lengthy illness. He was 75. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on June 2, 1934, the son of the late Charles J. and Carolyn M. (Bennett) Dunn. After attending the former LaSalle High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard during the Korean Conflict. Jim was part of the crew to catapult the jets off the ship. He traveled the far east and enjoyed Japan and Hong Kong. After his discharge, he returned from California and worked at Kimberly Clark, Oldbury Chemical, Bell Aerospace and the Carborundum Company. He retired from St. Gobain Corporation as a research technician. He enjoyed fishing, boating, traveling and woodworking. Jim belonged to the Niagara River Anglers and camped on the Key River with friends. He had been an usher and trustee for St. Paul's United Methodist Church before its closing. He then joined St. James United Methodist Church and was a member until his passing. Jim and his wife enjoyed genealogy and traveled far searching for their family's roots. Volunteering at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center was a good part of Mr. Dunn's last years, along with working with the PAL doing bicycle rodeos. He is survived by his wife, Carole (Meyers) Dunn; two daughters, JoAnn (David) Stone of Youngstown and Kelly (Frank) Vence of Lockport; grandchildren, Stephany Vence of Buffalo, Kristina Vence of Lockport, Timothy Stone and Daniel Stone, both of Youngstown; his brothers, William Dunn (late Barbara) of Hilton, NY, Charles (Karen) Dunn of Sanborn and sisters, Carol Ann (Robert) Platt of Ravenel, SC and Sharon (late Robert) Bradley of Shinglehouse, PA. He loved and was also survived by many nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law. He was predeceased by a sister, Constance Denman. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family at Niagara Falls Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, PO Box 450, Huntington Valley, PA 19006, St. James United Methodist Church, 4661 Porter Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14305, or to a charity of one's choice. Dear Carol, Joann and Kelly, I was viewing the Gazette and saw Jim's photo come up. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Jim as being funny, kind and thoughtful. I also remember watching him watch each of you and saw in his face the love he had and shared with you. I hope all the memories you made with Jim will help you through this sorrowful time. I just got an e-mail from Holly letting me know of Jim's passing. After reading the article on Jim, I just realized that I worked with your husband at Carbo. Small world. The last time I saw you was for the memorial service for Betty (Walsh) Bull. My sincerest sympathy to you and your family.

Carole, Joann, Kelly & families,
We were so sorry to hear about Jim. He will be missed. I have so many wonderful memories of him at our cottage every summer of my life. He was patient, kind, funny and a true genuine lover of life. He taught me so much that I was able to draw as an adult and for this I will be forever grateful to have known him. We were so glad to have seen him at our last visit home. We hope your good memories can help heal your pain now. Love, Cindy, Monte, Jenifer & Lisa Drew

Dear Aunt Carole and family,
Uncle Jim holds a special place in my heart; he was so fun to be with when I came to visit Niagara Falls and the cabin. I have a lot of great memories fishing with him and even one of riding motorcycles on the island in Canada. (He witnessed a big jump I did by mistake - and was so excited about it!) I loved his sense of humor. I am sad for your loss and sad that there is such a great distance between our families. I feel truly blessed to have had Uncle Jim be part of my life. I hope that you all find comfort in remembering his legacy - your family's bond.
Love, Jill

I just can't imagine not seeing Jim across the street. You have all been such a part of our lives for so many years. I remember he was at my high school graduation party....and that way a long time ago. I will miss him. He was an awesome life long friend. I guess Jim and my dad are in heaven together sharing stories...like they used to. Jim will be sadly missed. You all remain in our prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers go out Carol, Kelly, JoAnn and the family of Jim Dunn.

Jim was one of the finest gentlemen one could have had the pleasure to meet. His kindness and consideration for others showed through his volunteer work, and the love he had for his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren was apparent whenever the family got together.

May he rest in peace.

A Lakota Sioux prayer dedicated to the Military dead & Survivors from the Vietnam War.

GrandMother East:
From you comes the sun which brings life to us all; I ask that you have the sun shine on my friends here, and bring a new life to them -- a life without the pain and sadness of the world; and to their families, bring your sun for they also need your light for their lives.
GrandFather South:
You bring the storms from the south which brings the rains to nourish us and our crops. Be gentle when you fall on my friends; and as the rain touches them, let it wash away the pain and sadness that they carry with tGrandMother West: You take the sun from us and cradle it in your arms, then you bring darkness onto us so that we may sleep. When you bring the darkness to my friends here, do so without the nightmares that we have had for so long. Let your stars and moon shine on my friends in a gentle manner; and as they look at the stars, they remember that those stars are the spirits of my friends shining on them and those friends are at peace.
GrandFather North:
You are the Warrior, you have ridden alongside my friends here into battle, you have also felt their love and caring when you were wounded or lonely; ride alongside of them, for now they are in this the hardest battle for their life, the battle for inner peace. Now is the time for you to care for them.
GrandFather Sky:
May your songs of the winds and clouds sweep the pain and sadness out of my friends' hearts; as they hear those songs, let them know the spirits who are with those songs are at peace.
GrandMother Earth:
I have asked all the other GrandFathers and GrandMothers to help my friends rid themselves of the troubles that weigh so heavy on their hearts. This way, the weight they carry will be less; and they will walk more softly on you.

GrandMother Earth, from your womb all spirits have come when they return to you; cradle them gently in your arms and allow them to join their friends in the skies. If they want to hurry themselves to you, tell them you are not ready; and they must wait, for now they can pass on peace to others.

May the Great Spirit watch over you, and may you be at peace.
REST IN PEACE GOD BLESS and THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE JIM
