James Earthman Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, 2018.
James Bradshaw Earthman IV
1957-2018
James Bradshaw Earthman IV passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 29, 2018. He was 61 years old.
Jim was born July 22, 1957, in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Houston and Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. After completing his degree, he worked as a stockbroker and real estate broker in New York City. He returned to Houston to join the family business and graduated from the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service with honors in 1995. He was the 4th generation of the Earthmans to go into the family business that was established in 1889, managing Earthman Bellaire for 28 years. He always remembered and believed in the statement, "When you get into this business, the business gets into you." Taking care of families was something he took pride in and was honored to do.
To say Jim loved to travel was an understatement. His favorite place was Aspen, Colorado where he loved to spend time with his dad and have a beer at the Red Onion and loved talking to people all over the world on his "Ham Radio." Although Jim loved to travel, his greatest joys were his two boys, Garrett and Kyle. He was so proud of the wonderful young men they have become. "Jimmy" as he was affectionately called by his siblings, valued family and was excited for the arrival of his first grandchild and the wedding of his younger son.
Jim was a caring and thoughtful individual. Being a funeral director and helping families through difficult times was his calling. He understood life could be short and to live it to the fullest and letting those that you love, know it. He was a kind and compassionate man not just in his words but with his actions as well.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Mae Earthman. He is survived by his sons Garrett and wife Abigail Earthman, and Kyle Earthman and his fiancée Kristin Powers. His father James B. Earthman III and wife Cindy. His brothers and sisters, Sissy Lappin and husband Mark, Beth Hall and husband John, Katie Cullen and husband Harry, Bill Earthman and Cathryn Wood, John Earthman and wife Michele, Addie Pappous and husband Norman, and Jenny Worsham. His nieces and nephews who adored "Uncle Jimmy", Leah Lappin, Nick Lappin, Harrison Cullen and wife Lilly, Hugh Roy Cullen, Katie Rose Cullen, Liam Earthman, Bradshaw Earthman, Mary Margaret Earthman, Katherine Earthman, Kelly Owens, Sofia Hitchings, John David Marion and wife Meg, Jim Marion, Richard Pappous and Michael Pappous.
The family would like to thank all of his "work family" at Earthman Bellaire: Merlin Hernandez, Tim McEwen, Carmen Wright, Brandei Walker, Leslie Rojas and Stephanie Deman. Especially Merlin who was not just his coworker, but his friend who he loved as a sister.
Jimmy always had a way of looking for the good in a person or situation. If he didn't agree with you, he had a gift of understanding why you felt that way and respected your opinion. His understanding and compassion is a wonderful legacy he will leave with us forever.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m., Vigil service, Friday, November 2, 2018 at Earthman Hunters Creek, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2018 at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Rd., Houston, Texas 77098. Rite of Committal will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Fayetteville, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Bill Earthman, John Earthman, Nick Lappin, Norman Pappous, Mark Lappin, and Thad Hill.
For those wishing, donations may be made to the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, 2900 Louisiana Street, Houston, Texas 77006, or to a charity of your choice.

I just heard about Jimmy's passing, and I'm without words. Although we didn't know each other well, he seemed to come and go in my life. We carpooled to TH Rogers together (he always wore very colorful socks!), and he took care of my mom when she passed away in 2010. He was always friendly and kind when I would see him around - most recently at the Lee reunion. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. I will miss him. May he rest in peace.

My condolences to the Earthman family. I remembered when he hired my wife, Brandei. She was happy and so was he. I enjoyed talking to him and hearing about his travels. He will be missed.

We are all heartbroken losing Jim, so many memories, and believe it or not all of us for many years having a good time working at Earthmans. It was just a very large family of friends working together who have remained friends and care about each other all these years. I so so enjoyed our visits together over wine at the Stone Cellar in Roundtop. These visits are when I truly realized what a sweet soul this man had. God bless Jim, Rest in Peace my friend. We will always love you and you'll never be forgotten.

So sorry and saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I met Jim at work on a Graveside service. He and I shared some stories and discovered we both went to Robert E. Lee High School. He was so nice and I enjoyed getting to know him, plus I felt very privileged to meet a "Earthman" being new to the business. He invited me to the Bellaire open house and said he would love to show me around. What a nice man and sweet smile. God Speed.

I know Jim is truly with the Angels. When I worked with Jim at the Bellaire Chapel, he always showed respect and love towards the families he served. We were blessed with his kindness and wonderful sense of humor. When we had worked many long hours, he was always the one to cheer us on and make us laugh. If it was a holiday, Jim always made sure that the staff had a holiday meal. He would stay, and let us go home early.
You and your wonderful smile and caring heart will be greatly missed. May God keep you in His care.

Jim "TEX" as I knew him was the first person I met upon arriving at Monmouth college. I attribute the fact that I stayed and attained a degree to "Tex." We were having such a great time making memories that it was actually easy to get the degree! Jimmy was the guy everyone knew on campus and admired for his sense of humor , ability to have a good time and his kind and generous heart ! From road trips to texas to midnight Phi Kapp Psi house visits Jimmy was always up for adventure! He will be greatly missed but his contributions never forgotten. My deepest sympathies to Kyle and Garret and the entire Earthman Family. May he rest in peace
with love and sympathy
