James Errico Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2008.

HIGH POINT — James Melton Errico, 68, died surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 8, 2008.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated 1 p.m. on Friday, January 11, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church by Father Joseph C. Zuschmidt, O.S.F.S. Celebrant.

Jim was the beloved and devoted husband of Hilde Errico for 45 years. His legacy of faith, wisdom, and humor will remain with Hilde, their four children, their children's spouses, and eleven grandchildren, James and Nora Errico, parents of Eleanor, Quinn, and Charlotte; Robert and Jane Errico, parents of Anthony, Nicholas, and Christopher; Greg and Marcie Errico, parents of Granite, Braun, and Max; and Cynthia and Peter Deighan, parents of Aidan and Francis.

His generous and fun-loving spirit will be remembered with great affection among the many whose friendships he cherished and by his sister, Judy Upjohn and brother, Jerry Errico.

His compassion as a physician will be remembered not only through his practice of over 35 years in High Point, N.C., but also through his service locally at the High Point Community Clinic. His medical service extended beyond the local community. It began in Vietnam with soldiers and orphans and extended to mission trips in Latin America in more recent years. His knowledge of medicine and love of teaching were greatly esteemed and continue to bear fruit among his patients, students, and colleagues alike.

His positions as chief of the Medical Staff and chairman of the Board of Trustees at High Point Regional Hospital were marked by his vision and deep sense of community service. His commitment to his faith and marriage will also continue to enrich the lives of those he touched through his leadership in Engagement Encounter. His involvement with the Boy Scouts as camp doctor and Scoutmaster as well as his tutoring of elementary students through Cities in Schools were among his favorite volunteer experiences. His donation of over 100 units of blood to the American Red Cross during the course of his life was a testimony to his fundamental commitment to life.

A time for visitation with the family will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, at Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Mobile Meals, 308 QuarterPath Lane, Jamestown, NC 27282 and the High Point Community Clinic, 779 N. Main St., High Point, NC 27262.

I am saddened and humbled by this loss. Dr. Errico was the kindest doctor I've ever encountered, and set a standard for patient (person) care that is to be aspired to. In the almost twenty years that I knew him, he was so much more than just a physician-- he was a friend.

God's peace be with his family, who will undoubtedly suffer his loss the most.

Hilde and Family,
I was very sad to hear of Dr. Errico's death. I started going to his office for eye exams at the age of five. He was always fun to visit with, sincere, kind, and loving to me. I drew him pictures that he hung on the office walls for many, many years (probably 20 +)! I feel blessed to have known someone with such a wonderful spirit.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Hugs and Love,
Linda Lampe Park

Dr. Errico served Troop 1 as Scoutmaster and affected the lives of many boys. They have grown into better men because he not only believed in the Scout Oath and Law but believed in us. I was honored to serve as his first Senior Patrol Leader. In good fun, we wrestled while on a family camping trip. As he was an excellent wrestler,he pinned me in 2 seconds. I called for help and 20 boys pulled him off of me. I declared victory and he laughed. He was a wonderful man. An outstanding role model, I will miss his smile. I was truly blessed to have spent time with Jim and honored to call him my friend.

Mrs. Errico & Family,
I am so sad to hear about your loss... About a year ago I got to take my little girl to see him about getting glasses. It was neat to catch up and I loved seeing his pictures of family on the walls. You could tell what "mattered" to him. I will keep your family in my prayers...Aundrea White Hendley

Dear Hilda and Family, I grieve for each of you in the loss of your wonderful Jim. His life is certainly his legacy. I will always remember his office as it was a hallmark to who he was as a man and what he held important: pictures of all of you, drawings and notes by the many children whose lives he touched. He is and will be an unforgettable man. All who knew him are deeply saddened at by his death. I feel blest that he was my doctor and friend. My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to each of you. My deepest condolences to the Errico family for the loss of James. Though I never had the opportunity to meet James, I have heard stories of him through his brother, Jerry, who himself is a wonderfully inspiring man - no doubt James inherited some of that Errico charm. The world will be a little cooler without it. Love and blessings to the Errico clan in this difficult time.

Respectfully,
Sara Smith
