BUCKSPORT - James "Hammer" Fernald Jr., 81, died unexpectedly April 21, 2011, at his home. He was born in Boston, the son of James J. and Louise Fernald Sr. He was a finish carpenter and dry wall expert in Chatham, Mass., and Bucksport for many years. He played in the Cape Cod baseball league for 12 years, and settled in Maine 30 years ago. James is survived by his wife, Mary (Coulter) Fernald of Bucksport; children, Shelly Robbins and Dale of Searsport, Cathina Black and Steve of Bucksport, Scott Fernald and Laura of Bucksport, James Fernald III and Carol of Yarmothport, Mass., Karen Moore and Jerry of Chatham, Mass., Patricia Gyolai and David of Rifle, Colo., Pamela Bunting of Bucksport and Esther Shinn of Bucksport; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Grout of Quincy, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sheri Lee Fernald. A gathering will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at Frankfort Congregational Church Vestry, Frankfort. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
